Another crank failure

On the RRS forum yesterday another crank failure reported page 5 below, just 41k on the clock

Ok, I’ve got an L322 4.4 TDV8..... and I get that generally folk only post on a forum when stuff is broken, but even a few crank failures reported on the 3.0 engine would be enough to make me avoid it. I don’t need that worry. I sometimes think a Disco 4 would be a nice practical car, I loved my D2, but the crank failures would make me avoid that also, and I don’t think there was any real engine alternative in the UK.....

If I get an L405, it will be a V8.....

Had a D3 before the FF, brilliant motor, and always fancied a D4, but wouldn’t touch one with the preverbial pole.
Always amazes me how LR are allowed to get away major issues like the crank failure, and wasn’t there a problem with the Discovery Sport 2.0 engine?

My D4 is a 2.7, it’s based on the same basic engine architecture as the 3.0. Can’t say I’ve had an issue with it, and they also have some issues with the crank failures. Tbh if I was going to see a failure I’m sure it would have gone by now!

The failures would put me Off owning a 3.0 unless I was protected in Some way, but if it came with a warranty which paid out of the crank failed then I could live with it. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I had a spun bearing on my 3.0. The crank was in one piece as I stopped the engine right away, but was obviously damaged.

Having been through this, it's sickening and the costs are ££££. Yes, I got it repaired which is documented here.

The chances of this happening are slim when you consider the thousands of T/SDV6s on the road, but when it happens, it ain't nice. Kev

Looks like the ingenium Diesel is taking over as most unreliable engine Shocked Rolling Eyes Went to my local MD and they had a line of 13 cars waiting for an engine! Shocked Shocked Shocked

Turbo bang and then picks up on the engine oil... Then BOOM!

I think the 2.7's snap the crank and the 3.0's spin the bearings. Was one of the reasons I went for an SD V8. It's most likely not going to happen had I chosen a SDV6, but did not want to take the chance.

My only concern with the 4.4 was if the primary turbo blew seals and fed the engine so I have devised that the EGR butterfly gets closed for 15 seconds whenever the ignition is switched off - no air, no combustion. But it appears from possible fault codes that the 3.6 TDV8 PCM caters for unexpected running and closes its butterflies and issues a fault code, which IMO should be done for all turbo diesel engines.

I know that feeling!

I really want an L322 but I’m nervous as everyone around tells me I’m an idiot whilst they sit in their BMW’s, Tesla’s and Lexii(!?), whilst none have them have ever owned one!

I’m going to go down the route suggested by a member on here which is to buy £2k or £3k below budget and set aside for any major issues. It’s a case of getting a feel for how much does it cost if;

- gearbox goes on td6 (£2.5k?)
-turbos blow on 3.6tdv8 (£4.5k?)
- timing chain and tensioner don’t 5.0s/c etc. (£2k??)

I also see Clarksons TDV8 has blown its turbos (3.6tdv8?) and he’s having it rebuilt!

All cars have their issues at some point. Might as well be sat in something nice whilst you wait for the recovery truck 🤣

A Trap 

As said above, every car and make has its ‘common’ issues and ‘uncommon’ issues… if you think buying a Lexus or other brand puts you in the ‘I can never break down or have any expense or inconvenient club’ you are wrong. It’s just the risk you take with electrical/mechanical devices.

There are some lemon models out there but even then you have to be unlucky… they can make a good car by mistake on Friday afternoon just before knock off 😂

Rolling with laughter If only they let you stay in your vehicle when you get recovered! In my experience flat beds aren’t that comfortable inside 😀

I’m afraid the sdv6 is one engine I actually won’t go near! I know 2 people who’ve had the crank fail one with a Disco4 and one with a RRS
