2010+ Front wiper arm removal

Hi all,

I want to remove and refurbish both front wiper arms but I cannot remove the drivers side one, not even attempted the p/s yet...

I’ve looked thru the workshop manual and it speaks of a clip that needs to be removed after the bolts been taken off. I can’t see any clip, just the bolt. With the bolt off it won’t budge at all.

I’ve done a search and watched a few YouTube clips and it appears the later L322s have different fixings to that of earlier ones?

Any pointers well received! Thumbs Up

I’m interested in the answer to this one. My wiper motor failed a couple of years ago, and the garage I used broke their puller trying to get the wiper arms off. They gave up in the end, and just fitted my new motor to the old linkage..... I too thought they should come off once the nut was undone.....

I did buy a puller specifically to do the job, assuming it would fit. Nope. Far too small, not enough reach even when unwound to the fullest. And I don’t think longer ones are available. 2012 4.4 TDV8 Westminster - Baltic Blue, Jet interior

I’ve just looked at the Workshop Manual and I think the clip they mention is for the wiper arm to the wiper blade, so that may be a red herring.

I wonder if they seize onto the splines. My garage soaked them in release agent... still wouldn’t come off. 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

yep, couldn't get mine off either when I wanted to change the slightly rusty wipers, ended up giving up and just swapping the blades. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

There is no clip, they are the same as the earlier ones, I managed to get both off when I had the windscreen done a couple of months ago, it took a large puller, an incredible amount of force was needed, the puller has a 6-7inch bar and I used an extension on it, the trick is to give it a bit and then wait, keep giving it a few mm extra every 30 seconds or so, by this stage you are playing a tune as the puller is under so much pressure it pings when you give it some...

They both surrendered after a while but it probably took about as long to get them off as the fitters took to change the screen...

I did it myself as I wanted to damage it if that's what it took... if you can't do it yourself it might be an idea to get a windscreen replacement company to remove them, they do it all day long... Thumbs Up Pete

All I can add to Haylands good advice is the old trick - if you have the time to spare and the job is not urgent.
Try some penetrating oil, on a daily basis, for several days, up to a week. A pain I know and in Haylands case probably would have meant diddley squat, but it does help at times. Thumbs Up

PS - That 'ping' noise is horrible when it sounds like you have just cracked the shaft Big Cry

Thanks all, I’ll try the slow approach with consecutive days of soaking in penetrating oil.

I had used penetrating oil for over a week before, there was absolutely no evidence of any of it within the fitting after it succumbed to extreme violence, hence why I never mentioned it... the taper joint is just too tight...!!! Pete

I didn't know it was a taper joint, know what you mean, the oil would then be useless.

It's a fine spline taper joint made of some type of alloy and is corroded together... Thumbs Up Pete

2011 Range Rover Autobiography TDV8 Stornoway Grey

Bit of thread resurrection here.

Can anyone please confirm if the wiper arms changed over the production run please? I need to replace mine (passenger side popped off the link, stopped mid stroke and the driver side smashed into it breaking the tabs on the aero bit and making it next to useless despite gorilla glue intervention). I could just change the plastic aero bit if that’s available separately.

Thanks

Thanks

hi all happy new year. i always use diesel to soften the alloy white powder that bonds the spline together I put a hand towel around to stop the mess and spray it with a load of diesel. or you can use standard thinners with a brush and soak it in that. when its had a good soaking grab hold of the lower arm and pull it up to put tension on it and give the round part a good hit with a hammer I use a body hammer with a square end and lift it up and down while hitting it and keep spraying diesel on it while you shock it she will go after a good bit of sweating later works for me anyway a good wire brush I use a Dremel to clean up and use an anti-corrosion grease suitable for alloy parts .when putting back and use an a4 stainless steel nut to replace the old steel one. and don't forget to set the angle of the driver's side wiper when you put it back together. also, mark the blade with a bit of masking tape on the screen so she stops in the same place. when you resemble the arms new vehicle purchase

Thanks for the reply, I have the arm off, courtesy of a 2 arm puller (the noise was a bit of a shock) so just need to know if thee arms changed during the production run. I somehow doubt it but just wanted to check.
