Sounds fair but be careful on the cable size to the rear. The existing one to the fusebox in the boot. I would guess to be around 100A capacity (I have not measured the conductor cross sectional area)

Beware of the following situation:
Bonnet battery almost dead, boot battery well charged. Connect rear battery to fusebox terminal, press start.
Almost all the current to the starter will come from the rear, potentially overloading the cable to the front.

I may be paranoid but a lifetime of 'Sod's Law' has left its mark. Big Cry Forty years of progress. 1972-2012

A Trap

Due to the lockdown I purchased a 28w solar panel and a cheap 12v MPPT charge controller, charges at a max of 5 amps. I am happy with the performance and have had no issues of the last 10 months. I used the CTEK battery plug and purchased another plug for the charge controller so I can easily swap between solar or CTEK.

I have a CTEK 25amp charger/supply so may upgrade the solar panel to a full 300w panel and add a 240v inverter so I can use the CTEK charger for conditioning as well as maintaining. Don’t really need to but I like solar projects and this would save boredom while in lock down plus I can use the system if we have black out to charge phones, laptop and iPads etc.

Thanks everyone Ctek seems to be the answer. Have to save a few more pennies.! Was interested to see the hard wired one on I think the Sport forum with a hidden electric adapter in the back bumper. I would be worried about it blowing when the car was running.

Got excited with the 22w solar solution till I saw your location....Malaga might be a bit sunnier than Cumbria lol!

I have a ring battery charger that is suitable fir AGM batteries but it is a traditional garage charger. 2012 tdv8 Westminster arrived Jan 19 gone Dec 23

Yep, definitely a bit sunnier here.

As you probably have worked out your Ring charger isn’t suitable, you need a ‘smart’ charger that can maintain as well as charge so it can be left connected. 👍

Trickle charging

Hi there
I am fine running a lead to mine and have the ctek charger but am such a novice, I dont even know where the battery is!
I think its in the back under the spare wheel which seems a crazy place to put it?
So I just wondered if there are easy accessible points to connect to ideally without removing the contents of the boot and the wheel ?
(I dont have the towing gear)
My aston had a useful cigarette lighter point in the boot but guess that isnt an option on the Vogue TDV8?
thanks Rob

What model do you have? L322 battery is under bonnet on passenger side . L405 I think has two batteries I am sure someone with better knowledge of them will be able to assist. 2012 tdv8 Westminster arrived Jan 19 gone Dec 23

That sounds good to me! So does that stay connected permanently?
a name of the product you have would be real useful or link to where you buy one please.
thanks Rob

trickle charging

Thanks everyone
Will have a look for the 12v socket in boot...that will certainly make life easier !
otherwise I guess theres no harm permanently wiring in the adapter to the terminals.
appreciate everyone’s help
Rob

thanks again!
i was never aware of the plugin charger point (just inside boot on left)
thought I was going to have to get wheel out to get to the posts.
So easy just to leave it plugged in now !

Was in Aldi this morning and they had battery chargers in. £12.99 they are suitable for AGM batteries and can charge both 6 and 12 volt batteries. Model no is Auto XS MD 19787. Can charge at either 0.8 or 5 A and once fully charged goes to trickle charge mode 0.05 to 0.15 A.

It displays current battery voltage and charge level.
Came with a three year guarantee so will see how it goes. 2012 tdv8 Westminster arrived Jan 19 gone Dec 23

CTEK MXS 7.0 plugged into the boot 12V aux sockets which is permanently live. Works well, the CTEK charging lead is small enough to go past the seal between the upper and lower tailrgate. This setup is in a garage.
