4.4 or 4.2sc

I am currently looking to get myself an L322. I am undecided on which engine to go for. I have a budget in mind that would see me in either a 4.4i or 4.2 sc. I have previously had the 4.4 engine on gas in an x5 and that ran brilliantly however i have no experience or knowledge of the 4.2 sc when running gas.

Which engine would be the best option to go for.

Thanks

Ahem one has a supercharger and better base specification and the other doesn’t. Why is this a question even?

My question was relating to which engine is better for LPG, I know the 4.4i is fine but i have no experience of the 4.2 sc engine either with or without lpg

I have a 4.2 on gas for 7 years now, I have slight petrol addition after 2900 rpm and valve saver, just a simple drip feed after throttle butterfly, done about 50k on gas no issues whatsoever.

The bmw engine has harder seats and is better for lpg though.

The 4.4 is easier to convert to LPG. The 4.2 requires the extra oil feed system for valve protection. Current:

Aha LPG not just Gas as in Petrol Wink

Anyway as I said one has a super charger and a lot more horsepower and a better base specification. Why is this a question 🤣

Either will be fine if the installer is good. Personally I wouldn’t bother with it. If fuel economy is an issue then one may as well get the diesel. Those petrol engines aren’t ULEZ compliant anyway, so won’t have that benefit either. Both engine models are quite old now, and cheap to buy. But does it make sense to spend the money to add LPG to them at that age? You can buy a lot of fuel for the cost of an installation.

I do like the BMW engine and being a more simple installation it might be a diy job for me. I removed and refitted the LPG to my X5 when i had the headgasket and timing chains done.

I just want v8 goodness back in my life. Not especially concerned about economy. I currently have an M3 and civic type r so i am used to the bills but i can pick up a used LPG system and potentially diy fit so i might aswell save some cash.

You can do the conversion on the ajv8 without removing manifolds but it is a bit tricky, also you do need to fit a petrol return line with a suitable orifice installed to keep the fuelling correct, whether this is needed on the bmw lump I don't know.

Because the 4.4 is an engine which is perfectly suited to running on LPG, the 4.2 engine is a very different engine which suffers from softer valve seats and can lead to a £3-4k bill to have the issue remedied.

What's the problem with someone seeking advice? The early 5.0's are a flawed engine as well and in many ways the 4.2 is far better from a reliability point of view. Rolling Eyes 2002 4.6 Vogue SE - Alveston Red with Lightstone Leather
