Hi all,

I’m getting a whining noise that changes pitch with revs. If I put the car into neutral when moving the noise disappears. It’s not very loud but definitely noticeable even with the radio on. I would say it is most noticeable when slowing down at around 30mph or so, probably because the revs are masking the noise? It definitely sounds as if it’s coming from gearbox area. If I’m sat on the drive at home and Rev the engine I can’t really hear anything from outside the car, it’s more noticeable inside the cabin.

I took it to my local specialist and they said there was a leak from the gearbox so they have changed the sump, filter and oil and then they gave the car back to me saying the noise is fixed.

Well it definitely isn’t fixed as the noise is exactly the same. Before I go back to garage I wanted to get a few opinions on here as to what I can check at home. Also don’t want to take it back to this garage really so has anyone got any recommendations for specialists around the Rugby area?

Does it change pitch with revs or with speed?

You say revs, but then you say it disappears when it goes into neutral - if you're in neutral and rev the engine does the whine still change in-line with the revs?

I will get a video on way home tonight. Personally I think it could be the torque converter starting to fail but I have no way of verifying this so I guess it will be a trip to a gearbox specialist.

Could very well be signs of an impending alternator failure

Thanks for that link, it’s actually very similar to that noise!! Was hoping there was a root cause near the end of the thread but it seems you’re yet to fix this issue

I agree it could be alternator on its way out too. I just don’t want to start replacing things to not fix the problem as it’s going to get very costly. I’m tempted to just leave it and see if it gets any worse. Although it is annoying!!

I'm not sure of the location of the alternator but is it possible to get a long screwdriver pressed against the alternator and then press your ear on the handle and you should be able to hear if the alternator is noisy or not 2011 TDV8 Vogue SE

I find the whining noise that increases with revs and speed is the the wife, solution is to remove wife and drive alone or drive very slowly keeping revs down.

Seriously though, Remove the drive belt and see if the noise goes, will remove a lot of possibles and narrow down the search. Alternator is favorite but idlers, tensioner and water pump could make a whine. Once the belt is off check for any play in the pulleys and rough or tight running, then start the engine and try and replicate the noise, everything will be OK for a short couple of minute rev or drive.

Hmm, there's something, but I'm not sure I'd have noticed it if you'd not pointed it out, to be honest!

I think maybe I’m wanting a noise to be there and therefore hearing it more? Maybe it is just the normal cabin noise, I don’t know. I think I will wait and see if I notice any change in the noise before going any further, it is really quiet

I started to hear a whining noise and ignored it for a while. As I started to think about it more I began monitoring the vehicle signals in the hidden menu, specifically the battery voltage reading which became more and more erratic and was nowhere near the voltage it should have been.
Obviously I ignored it for too long and ended up being brought home by the RAC when the alternator threw in the towel.
If it’s worrying you, check the voltage; it may be ok but it also might give you a heads up if the alternator is starting to die  2017 Jaguar F Pace 25t Portfolio - still part of the JLR family 😀
