Upper tailgate stuck closed but thinks it’s open?

So I close my tailgate this morning with the button got in to start the car and I got the warning indication that the tailgate was open so I push the interior button and it just kind of made a noise. I went out to it and push the exterior button and it tries to open just kind of like a smige then it sucked back in. It will not open at all and the dash shows that it is open. I tried to push and pull on it and nothing.

Any ideas? Of course I’m just out of warranty.

Looks like the upper tailgate has dropped, it's not aligned anymore to the tail lights. Try to raise it up while pressing the button... There is an alignment procedure described below, after you manage to open it...

Thanks for the reply.

I manage to get it open. I crawled into the back and removed the trim piece. The LR troubleshoot manual mentioned an Emergency latch. I found that and popped it and it opened. It seems to be functioning fine now.

I don’t think it’s dropped. I’m thinking maybe just a fluke? I’m going to leave the trim panel off for a couple days just in case.

I have attached some photos of everything including the alignment on my tailgate. Does it look okay? I don’t see any of the where marks mentioned in that video.

On that video, a quad tailpipe system for a 3.0 oil burner's a bit on the sad side, for me. That is my Friday moan out of the way! Thumbs Up

nasaguyjoe, well done for being able to crawl through and manually pop the tailgate. I wonder if something had gotten trapped in the mechanism or something. L405 P400e Autobiography (MY2020)... Silicon Silver / Espresso

The upper part has definitely dropped, it's visible mostly in your photo of the right side... Probably misaligned too, as it's lower than in the left side... Here's a photo of my tailgate, about which another forum member commented that it's a little too low too... The rubber seal is less visible than the screen capture from your movie. By the way, does your soft close work? Sorry for the dirt, the weather is miserable here...

I took mine in recently to have the rear tailgate aligned as is was out at the left hand side similar to your pictures. Mine was sorted under warranty, however on the receipt I noticed they had fitted two new hinges. Might be worth investigating is there some technical bulletin on the subject which relates to the problem. Range Rover Sport 2023 D350 Autobiography
