United Kingdom 2015 Range Rover Vogue SDV6 Corris Grey

Many thanks for everyone’s comments. I fully intend to pursue this with JLR. The Warranty companies stance it that corrosion is a manufacturing issue and is should be covered by corrosion warranties with the vehicle manufacturer. I believe JLR is 6 years.

For me it’s getting acknowledgment that this is a clear ‘issue’ and that other vehicles may be suffering the same hidden problem. The DVSA is a great shout and I will follow this up.

JLR need to do the ‘right thing’ here and take responsibility before someone else suffers the same with potentially devastating consequences.

I will keep everyone informed of progress.

Looking at the new Defender today it was striking how much heavier duty the knuckle was, perhaps too much weight saving on the 405 and LR have realised that, especially in the context of a vehicle they aim at more off road use. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Update: JLR have rejected for the 3rd time stating 'outside influence' despite the independent report stating that there was no evidence at all to suggest this.

Have now gone to DVSA and they have immediately taken the case up and JLR now have 28 day to respond to their questioning. They also want to see all of the parts.

I also have a noise emanating from the front nearside (which I had replaced at my cost as I couldn't trust that the same would happen again).

My dealer carrying out the work told me that they also had to replace the driveshaft and track rod this side as the were fused to the knuckle and could not be separated. Another indication for me of dissimilar metals causing an issue. £2k bill in the end for this side. £1k for the damaged side.

The RR is now going back in on Wednesday to have the noise looked at. Its a sort of Whoom, Whoom, Whoom when at lower speeds 25-30mph. It disappears at higher speeds. Normally I would expect bearings or drive shaft but as both are new I am at a loss.

I am quickly falling out of love with my dream car Neutral

To answer the question about ownership. I am the second owner the first being a business women from Harrogate own who have never been in the boot or back seats. They still had labels on them from delivery. I don't this she was a weekend warrior racing up and down Yorkshire off road tracks and weakening this critical part. I think the bigger issue with JLR is I didn't buy from a main dealer and the last two services were by Land Rover independent specialists.

I will keep everyone posted as things progress.[/b]

Jlr really don't do themselves any favour with regards to further customer relations do they?

Unbelievable really being considered to be a luxury brand

Look at it from JLR's side, the vehicle is 5 years old, it hasn't seen a main dealer for the last two services and they have no control over it's use, for all they know it could have been used to launch a boat in the sea on a daily basis, or some other extreme use.

This doesn't appear to be the case this time and I hope Brid91 gets some recompense from them as it does appear to be a premature failure but you can't expect JLR to just pay up.

The driveshaft sticking in the front hub is a normal occurrence on a lot of fatties, getting the shaft back in the hub is even more fun...!!! Pete

You must admit though, JLR leave a lot to be desired in their design and quality. Brake lines that can corrode on a car that supposedly can wade to quite a depth is ridiculous, they dont even have the excuse of trying to save money to keep the price down. Thats just one example. The knuckle failing dues to corrosion is not acceptable no matter if it's been to a dealer or not, the joint between the dissimilar metals wouldnt have been serviced in any way at all and if it was caused by corrosion, steps should have been taken during design or assembly to prevent this occurrence.

I do hope DVSA come down hard on JLR and make them sort potentially fatal issues like this. BMW i3 Electric Car

The problem here is not knowing the full history of the car from the time it was driven from the showroom by it's first owner. Without the part being examined fully it's just speculation about why it has failed. It looks dramatic and would certainly have been disasterous had it failed at speed but how many have actually failed? It's very easy to start to throw accusations towards JLR but we should wait until we have all the facts before we begin mud slinging. Yes they have a problem with customer service at times (not all MD's are as bad as each other) but they are no different to BMW, Mercedes etc to name but a few.
I'm looking forward to more information regarding the DVSA's approach to JLR so I hope that the OP continues to keep this updated. 2011 TDV8 Vogue SE

No matter what the history excpt for a major collision with that wheel there arent any circumstances where this can be deemed acceptable IMHO.

I too hope the OP keeps us updated, JLR's alleged response to this is shameful. BMW i3 Electric Car

We don't know that this vehicle hasn't been involved in an accident since manufacture, not all accidents are recorded. No one is saying that this issue is acceptable but without the facts it's just guesswork as to why it has failed. All owners of the L405 will be following this with interest I'm sure but speculating on the reasons for failure serve no purpose in alleviating any concerns owners could have. As I mentioned before, how many of these knuckles have failed so far? According to this forum, none of the current L405 owners have had an issue with this component so it will be interesting to find out what exactly has caused this one to fail. 2011 TDV8 Vogue SE

Needs to go to a metallurgy lad to determine the cause of the crack/failure.

But it ain't normal wear and tear imo, or we'd have heard of lots more failures
