With lockdown and little use, have your seals dried out and failed to an extent? John

Possibly due to positive crankcase pressure, but really, just guessing.

I don't specifically know why the slow drive allows oil to build-up without the extra, direct to sump drain but it suggests that the turbo's seals have become very weak to the extent that the scavenger pump can't produce a low enough pressure.

Digressing a little, a new early 3.0 RRS here in Oz eventually had the engine replaced under warranty when serious smoke couldn't be stopped by multiple new secondary turbos then a new scavenger pump. It seemed that the oil-way connecting the turbo drain reservoir at the bottom of the sump with the scavenger pump at the top of the back of the right head must have been blocked or severely restricted. This was when LR was replacing lots of turbos, including my D4's, thinking that the turbo's seals had failed rather than the real cause. My D4 was due for another turbo just after the end of warranty but still covered for the earlier fault when the updated drain was released which I then fitted myself, being more convenient for me. |

Thanks GraemeS for a very good explanation of this problem.

If it continues after multiple "boots" then a drain might be needed.

Hi GraemeS, And when a refurbished turbo is installed, including new seals (absorbs most of the pressure). Where does the excess oil go? To the exhaust? Or can it go through the radiator to the engine ...? |
