New Windscreen Required!!

Got a stone chip a few months back and was hoping to see out the current crisis before getting it sorted, but the crack has now traveled over a foot so think I better get it sorted.

I’ve had a few windscreens replaced over the years but never on any of my land rovers.

I seem to remember a lot of owners on the D4 forum moaning that the replacement windscreens they had fitted were sub standard.

Looking for a heads up on what I should be insisting on having fitted to my RR with my insurance company. Not sure if there are different levels of windscreen that were fitted but mine is definitely heated and topix states that mine is fitted with Acoustic glass, but I’m not sure if that just relates to side windows.

Thanks for any pointers.

Have you got head up display? I’m pretty sure that needs a specific windscreen type.

I'm sure others with L405's can be more specific but my general advice is to take a picture of the symbols etched into the existing screen and insist that the new one matches when you book it in.

Don't be fobbed off and insist on checking the new screen to make sure it's the correct one BEFORE they remove the cracked one.

I also seem to remember someone mentioning that the trims also have to be replaced at the same time? Again, when booking and when they turn up check they have them.

The last thing you want is for them to have to go away and you have a FFRR you can't drive anywhere.

Regarding insurance, insist on a like for like replacement. After all, they charge you a higher premium because your car is higher value and more expensive to repair.

I have a couple of chips in mine but it passed the MOT without advisories so I'm ok at the moment but I'm dreading it when I have to get it done.

It was no biggie for me.

Autoglass came and fitted the right screen with the right markings. Pilkington?

I told them in advance I was going to be picky and they said, if you don’t like it, we’ll change it.

The one they brought was fine and the blokes (2 required) knew what they were doing.

Pleasantly surprised

When Autoglass did mine, I specified Pilkington on the initial call - they called back to say it would take a few days extra to source one of those - I told them I was fine to wait & have the right one fitted.

I used National windscreens
They were OK but had an issue with the heated screen - I had mentioned to Stan about the incorrect wiring connectors.
I also wanted a genuine screen, I had to settle for one that had a black block covering the words Range Rover as supposedly National cannot fit a Range Rover screen only an equivalent - hence the blacked out name.

I had to replace mine two weeks after I bought it new in 2018. I used Autoglass and they were excellent. I insisted it had to be a Genuine LR screen. Cost me £50. All LR cars from 1984

All booked in for Thursday with Autoglass. I have insisted on Pilkington so fingers crossed.

Their web site says they are only working on key workers cars, my wife is NHS so no issues there, but no details were asked for during the booking in process. I’m guessing it’s not quite as strict as the web site suggests.

Hope to report back with a trouble free experience Thumbs Up

If you can take it to them all the better. Last few screens I’ve had done were done at the depots. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Autoglass haven’t had depots in the UK for many (5+?) years now - it’s all van based. Or rather when my 405 screen was replaced last year, van x2 as it’s a two man job for that car. 2016 SDV8 AB

When my windscreen had a chip repair about two years ago it was at an Autoglass depot. I was told that they had got rid of all the depots and then regretted it, so there were now some again. So you might be lucky and be able to go to a depot, much better IMHO, especially for a bigger and more complex screen like on the RR, and also generally if there is dust/grit blowing around outside, it is raining etc. Only Range Rovers since 1988

They would only do it at a depot, had a choice of 3. Under normal circumstances would have chosen the one near the RAF museum in Hendon and wandered around there for a few hours Sad
