Greg,
I would find 2 larger plain washers that are approx 1cm less in diameter than the bore measurement, soak the leather washer in a saucer of oil overnight, then re- assemble it sandwiched between the washers. That will flatten it and increase its diameter, thus giving more compression. If nescasary, you could make 2 out of some rigid plastic.
If you are stuck, measure the cylinder bore and I will make you 2 .

Great suggestion Mike.

I did just that:

Put it all together and the fit with the increased pressure on the piston was so tight, as I was jiggling it all back together, the whole cylinder popped out of its base.

Which I didn't want because this thing's still got 400ml of old oil in the bottom and loads of spacers, washers and stuff all fell into the oil pool at the bottom. Big Cry Big Cry Had to walk away at that point

But came back to it again today.

Very messy job with all those parts in oil but reassembled it all and tried to pump it up and nothing still. Weird hissing sounds here and there and no suction.

Took it apart one more time draining the oil out this time and found a broken bit of plastic in the bottom of the cylinder. No idea what it's for but reassembled it again, slightly differently as far as the top and bottom cylinder seals go and screwed the top back on.

Because I drained the oil into a container, I stuck the suction end of the hose into the container.

Gave it a few pumps. Nothing. But no weird hissing. Went away for 5 mins. Came back and saw oil had come up the suction hose.

Pumped it some more, 5-6 strokes.

Whoosh!!!
I've got suction

Wait, what?? As I was trying to work out what the noise was, another:

Big Gurgle!!!
Oil container just got emptied and it's back in the draper.

It's working!!!!!

Shame it's too late in the day to change the oil now!!!

. Cheers, Greg

Cheers guys.

I'm not going to fully declared this one FIXED until I've sucked 9.5 of the black stuff out of my sump.
Fingers crossed it'll behave.

I had to grind two large washers down to approx 40mm to fit into the bore which is around 48mm.

. Cheers, Greg

OK so a week later I pop out to the car, get everything ready, warm up the engine, attach the suction and start pumping. A few strokes and I see oil running up the suction pipe. Great.

It got a litre out then nothing. Pumping more didn't help it just gurgled.

So I'm declaring this one officially: Fubar.

I doubt I'll try another. Packed it up it's going back to the seller.

With a litre out of the sump I was committed to changing the oil one way or another so up go the air bags and off came the sump covers, I'll be going with good old gravity today.

Cutting the side out of a disposable 15 litre cooking oil bottle (thanks to one of the local takeaways) the old stuff came out easily. First the barb-fitting hose off (strong fingers needed) and then the secondary drain, all the old stuff drained out quickly and easily.

Ok not as quick as you Draper fans, and granted I've had a dud - I'll be sticking with gravity Thumbs Up

9 litres of lovely new golden AF-L and a new filter, job done.

. Cheers, Greg

You got me there DrRob.

I know but I'm soured now....

Adding to today I've had quite a few years of maintaining my boat's twin Volvo Pentas using suction method through the dip stick (which is the correct way but a right PITA) left me longing for an old fashioned sump plug.

Once a year? I'll go with gravity and the cooking oil container!

But if anyone reads this with a duff one wondering if it can be fixed....

 Cheers, Greg

Greg,
Tough luck you couldn’t fix it, but your picture really does convince me that sucking it out is best.
No spills or drips, no lying on the cold floor on a piece of cardboard, no removing the underskirt, et etc.

I still intend to try fitting a schrader valve to mine when the slow boat from China docks just to try using my footpump instead of the built in hand pump just in case the hand pump ever fails.
You are still welcome to the spare one if it works.

Fellow suckers....
At £3.19.. for 2... these are a bargain.
Perfect fit, ( I might add some PTFE tape to the thread, but it didn’t leak on my test run.

I am giving Greg first chance for the spare one, but if he can’t make good use of it, I will gladly stick it in an envelope and post to the first sucker to PM me their address.

I tested it by emptying a couple of litres of old oil from a container into the tank.

Cheers
Mike.

Greg,
I had a couple of litres of old oil in a container, I connected my ffootpump and it emptied into the Draper no problem with just a few pumps.
I will probably never use it again this way because it is so easy with the integral hand pump, but at least I know it works.
Mike.
