never liked shell oil
i have used it on and off over the years, but every time i get into trouble, its back to castrol, problem solved RR 2005 4.4 petrol

Oil debates are always fun and full of options and little facts.

There are no bad oils out there, just some which are really good. If you change your oil you n time or better still sooner, your oil brand, type of choice and of the correct spec for the application will not be the the point of failure, something else will have gone wrong first!

i worked for a mob that had a mob of trucks, all petrol.
they bought a bedford diesel.
they asked the oil company for an oil that was suitable for both petrol and diesel.
the oil company supplied such an oil
the oil company ended up paying the cost of replacing all the petrol engines in the fleet RR 2005 4.4 petrol

The german site carpartsforless.co.uk - where I got my last year's AF-L oil - is no longer doing the AF-L

Making the Opie deal using Mike's code - the best deal I could find for AF-L

Opie do show a Millers oil compatible with the 4.4 TDV8 but we've learned you must use the AF-L

A bit like using Lifeguard8 on the ZF 8-speed. ZF say use this oil.
Other oil makers say they have compatibles.

Who do you believe?

I did qualify my comment with the correct type and spec... what you are talking about is high zinc additive like ZDDP for high pressure wear points like tap pets, buckets, shims and high pressure fuel pump etc.

Also asking for a generic oil is only asking for trouble.... again right type and spec.

This has nothing to do with brand.

As I said, most comments in an oil thread will come down to opinions and not facts it’s the same as opening Pandoras because x of asking which brand of tools are best, you will get every how has invested saying Makita/Dewalt/Milwaukee/Bosch/Hitachi etc is best.

You pay your money and make your choice.

Yes, Castrol recommend that oil, it meets the spec and type of use ie suitable for Diesel engines.

Even if Castrol do recommend their oil I don't get why anyone would choose to NOT use the oil recommended by Landrover.
I see all lubricants as being critical to the operation of our cars. I change my oil (Shell) and filter (genuine) twice a year so it costs me about £100 every 10K miles or a penny per mile so even if I was given an "equivalent" oil for free I wouldn't use it just to save this amount which is a drop in the ocean of RR running costs.
I use the same logic with ZF oil for the gearbox, spending £100 for 5 Litres looks expensive for oil every 50K miles but it's cheaper than a gearbox refurb.
