My passenger side steps start to retract on locking the car but come back out as though they have hit an obstacle. Had a quick look nothing seems to be fouling the mechanism.

Anyone else had this problem? Geoff

Are they clean and well lubed? Bish.

We should keep an eye on each other’s threads. A few good points raised on mine this evening.

Oddly SWMBO locked the car yesterday and the steps retracted OK, so its not just me frightened of her
On a more serious note what do people use to lube the mechanism as I have not done so because I am wary of debris sticking to grease would a thin spray like GT85 used regularly do it? Geoff

You will know I a stickler on service reports & what people have done on maintenance !

On our L322 - every month without fail

Spray large amounts on Silicone Spray over all moving edges ( NOT the dreaded WD40 - in the aviation world its not good name - as as it says on the title - Water Displacement for 40 days !!!

When the Silicone has removed all the debris / road film

Then coat with oil can - light machine oil over all moving parts ( inside and facing outside - there are a few linkages that MUST be oiled on regular basis )

Also CHECK the Wedge Keys for alignment & seating on collar puller - things can move and wear


The L322 we have are 12 model years and we have had no issues with the self deploying side steps ( if this helps )

As with the 380 - serving and maintenance is paramount !

WD40 Is water displacement and the 40 is the batch composition number. It took them 40 attempts to get it right, it was originally going to be called water displacement... but 40 attempts to get it right later.. and so the name was born.


I have no idea what these wedge keys are your referring to?, any pictures at all...

Also I am assuming you pilot A380s... we share something in common, I work for HM Royal Air Force, and I too am a pilot.

WOW Pilots - next time I'm on the bus I'm going to ask the driver how to service it.

Please don't on my account have an argument about WD40, I know what it does and what it's properties are. It looks like a good clean and lubing with a light lubricant might help, I'll give it a try later - thanks all for your input. Geoff

On occasion the near side step will retract and a second or so later it will extend again upon locking. I have attributed it to picking up loads of crap being on the side closest to the verge. I make sure to lock them out extended when giving the old girl a wash and find that all is well. If this wee bit of attention is all that's required for the benefit of having them then it's one of the more tolerable pains of FF ownership. I've has 2 significant issues caused by my MD remedied by another garage this week, so I 'll be visiting the MD in the next few days to test his language comprehension skills...  FF MY2010 3.6 tdV8 VogueSE

That should i clean the sidesteps with, As right now, the driver side one is misbehaving almost everyday.
On close inspection, i found the there is lot of dust/grime/mixed with previous lubricants struck at the parts inside.

So ideally i have to clean all this without causing any damage and then spray grease etc.

So what shall i clean it with? any suggestions
i reckon i will need a brush and some sort of oil to remove all the crap, so what should i use to clean it.

Actually I gave them a good going over with the jet washer then re-greased the moveable parts with waterproof grease and kept moving them in and out until they were working properly 2015 L405 SDV8 Autobiography
