L322 8HP 4.4TDV8 Gearbox Failure

Story so far. About 2 weeks ago I bought a 2011 Vogue SE 4.4TDV8 with 110k on the clock for a knockdown price of just over £11,500 from BCA buy it now. Now I know why! It had FSH from 3 LR dealers. Drove it back from Belle View auctions & noticed change down to second & first a bit notchy. Drove to Anglesey from Manchester, about 130 miles & it was OK. 2 hours later went a short drive 2/3 miles & going up a slight incline had loss of power. Tried to accelerate & nothing. Took foot off accelerator & power returned. This repeated several times & continued on my trip home, when cruising on light throttle, power was lost until foot off throttle & then accelerate.
So first thing was read fault codes. Only engine fault was EGR temp. sensor fault. Had some trans. faults but can't remember what they were! I have now tried a gearbox oil change with new filter. When I took the sump off there were a LOT of iron filings on the magnets & in the sump! Anyway after oi change reset adaptations & tried again but no improvement. Conclusion gearbox is foopared.
Started searching on ebay & a few are for sale. Wanted to check the trans type/No. & looked at mine. To my surprise the sticker read "8HP45 7000 AE 4.4V8D" Gearbox looks like original.
My questions are: was the 8HP45 fitted to the L322? I thought it should be a 8HP70.
Also will the 405 8HP70 fit my car? as a low mileage one is for sale.
Or will a 8HP70 from a L322 fit?
I think they may need reprogramming or the valve block swapping over. If the latter will it fit the 8HP70?

Or should I just sell it!!!

Sorry to hear about your trouble. Not sure about the model numbering. I thought they all had the 8HP70.

These trans are heavy duty, i've not read on here about a failure. There are plenty of us 4.4TDV8 owners over 100k miles too.

If your car has a towbar, it might explain the trans has had a harder life.

I hear that cars with problems get sent to auction. So maybe somebody knew there was was an issue and got rid.

. Cheers, Greg

No towbar or evidence of one. Sold by Hatfields Liverpool, Land Rover main agents. Last 2 services were by them but no mention of gearbox. Last service at 96k.

A different gearbox part number was introduced starting with VIN BA347155 but I can't believe that an 8HP45 was ever fitted. Microcat describes the boxes as 8HP70 from the outset which I expect to be true.

Have any engine-related fault codes occurred since clearing them?

Only engine code is for EGR temp sensor which will not clear. Trans came up with P0741 Torque converter clutch solenoid - circuit performance or stuck off.
Also forgot to mention a couple of times there has been a vibration through the car, quite bad one time so I slowed down for a while then it disappeared. Checked rear prop bearing & seems ok. Chassis No. BA345637.

The EGR fault code is probably this. Very common. I have it and it never clears. Instantly comes back. Will be getting it changed out at Rovertune in Reading soon

Just a thought on this OO__OO, you say oil change, but given your symptoms a power flush may be better.

I'm no expert mind, but a standard 'drop' of the oil (and pan/filter change) and you'll only get around 4-5 litres out.

The TC and the cooler will keep original oil in unless you visit somebody with a machine that will force change all the oil.

It's not helped by 'sealed for life' statements which I believe are stated by LR but not ZF.

. Cheers, Greg

LR's "sealed for life" means "sealed for life of any LR warranty that expire at 10years".

My mistake! The gearbox is an 8HP70 !!! I read the sticker with a mirror & my eyesight is not always so good. I checked again & it is embossed on the side of the casing 8HP70 Rolling Eyes . Sticker reads BH42 7000 AE.
Re oil change. I did just drop the sump & disconnect the pipes from the cooler. Put back approx. 4.75 lits. into box. The thing that concerns me is all the iron filings. All the magnets were covered & still more in the sump pan.

Trans is now fixed. Bought a second hand one with torque converter for £650+vat. Reputedly only done 32k miles.
Swapped over the ECU & put new oil & filter in. Drives perfectly though only taken it for a short drive so far.
In case anyone needs to know the original code ended in AE & the new one in AG but this doesn't matter. Austin Champ - First car I owned in 1967 ETE167F
