Auto Wipers

Thought I'd start a new thread rather than continue hijacking others.

After your comments on another thread, As it is Pi55ing down I've tested my wipers today. First I RTFM so it was all set up correctly but there was nothing "auto" about them on my trip out to get the lower tailgate release button. Did not stop when I did, did not speed up with road speed and could not see out the window at some points (until manual intervention of course).

So I can conclude - THEY DON"T WORK OR AREN'T FITTED. Big Cry

What's first to check - maybe the previous keeper had a new screen fitted without sensor.? Maybe the sensor is duff (but I can't even see one) Where is the best place to start to look? Ash

My auto wipers just get left where they are and do as they are supposed to (I presume) as they stop when the car does and wipe as required speeding up as it gets heavier?

Just wish it stopped raining so I could sort out the pdc Mad

'57 reg by the way if this helps?

Indeed, they are not the best auto wipers and mine don't vary with speed or stop when I do. My RRS did that though.

In the FFRR you have to turn the delay variable thingy on the wiper stalk to activate auto wiping, you can then set the wipe interval using this too.

The rear variable wipe is also a faff but once you get used to it is pretty good really, especially as it goes into continuous wipe mode if the wiper is activated and you put it into reverse. Discovery 4 HSE

This all sounds strange as I have never changed mine (except occasionally moving the stalk to initiate a manual wipe) so maybe when Gaz gets back from pc world he can let us into the secret of setting up the auto wipe as it's as he left it on mine. Whistle

OK - How do you "reset" them. The manual says move the stalk to position 1 (which is technically intermittent setting).. It says you can vary the setting using the twist switch (or intermittent wipe delay) which I did. But nothing Auto about it still.

The delay works fine but it's still just a manual delay setting. At one point I could hardly see there was so much water on the screen so can assume the auto function is caput or not there. Should I see a visible sensor in front of the RVM when viewed from outside?

Thx Ash

When it says reset it just means move them up and down on the stalk, so yes, to ittermitant and back. If this is not done on start up they won't do anything regardless of amount of rain. I think i read somewhere this is a safety fuction maybe due to american market and people going through car washes and getting the wipers mangled!! I may of made that up though!

Once started mine go plenty and don't need much rain but as stated is adjustable on the stalk to speed of wipe.

Somebody answer his question, fer chrissakes! Rolling with laughter

here's what your mirror would look like w/o a sensor

and here with

and here from outside the car

Resetting is done via diagnostic interface - so no easy out there.

I've always found them to work quite well in BMW's, RR's (same system).

Thanks Steve,

If the red "bulb" on the underside of the mirror is the giveaway then mine has this - so assume then that it does not have auto wipers.. Is this strange..? I was told it should be standard on a 54 plate Vogue and the manual does infact say "your car is fitted with auto rain sensing wipers"

Big Cry

Would it be just a case of buying a new RVM with sensors, plug into existing wiring and away I go? Ash

You will definately have them, you can confirm this on the build list for your car in Microcat.

But as I say, it was standard on every Vogue from 2002. It may be that you've had a replacement screen in the past and they havn't connected the wires back up. Others have told horror stories of autoglass just cutting through the wires.

OK but mine is the mirror as pointed out by Steve with the red bulb underneath, not with any sort of sensors behind it other than dipping lens.

I can't run microcat as I'm on a Mac so can't check. Ash

I have them and I have the red pod underneith... This is the alarm beacon & IR alarm receiver (for markets where RF is not allowed)

When you look at the mirror from the outside you should see the blue/purple square in the "foot" as per the last pic. That is the sensor...

PM me your reg no (if its original) or VIN and e-mail addy and I'll look all your details up and fire them over to you.

ps. I'm a mac and I cant do Censored .

Yup, I wasn't talking about the bulb - that's for the alarm as Dan says. The cover for the mirror mounting arm is the giveaway -skinny w/o and fat with a rain sensor. And from the outside the purple square as in the last pic. Thats the rain sensor. It shoots IR light into the glass which is reflected back and forth between the 2 glass surfaces w/o disturbance in the dry. When there is a drop of water on the glass it actually 'seeps' the light out of the glass and less reaches the IR receptor.

There are people building DIY touchscreens this way (search youtube for touch table).

OK - Slightly delayed.

Image of mirror (a bit dark but probably ok)

Which I guess means no sensor..!

and image of stalk

If they were indeed standard on a 54 Vogue, how do I tell if by changing to a new mirror will fix it.?

(ps - I may be in need of a new screen soon anyway as it has some large chips. do the screens come with the sensors or are they built into the mirror housing?) Ash
