Brake Tin Rattle Help Please

Whilst driving the car back home last night I noticed a tinny rattle coming from the front.

After crawling under it this morning, I noticed that the tin plate that sits behind the front discs is quite loose (When I move it around thats the noise I was hearing).

The passenger side is tight, but for the life of me I cant see anyway of tightening it up?

Anyone had this, or now how to tighten it back up?.

At least I can live with the rattle now I know what it is tho! Laughing Reformed

if its the bit a think you mean then you need to remove the wheels and tighten..cant remember if its from the rear or behind the brake disc..

this is a great vid on how to change your brakes. It also shows somewhere the brake protector shield which you refer to, so should allow you to access it and tighten up.

Thanks guys!

Problem sorted! I removed the wheel and there are some small bolts that hold it in place, but it has broken from all of them so there was no way of tightning it Big Cry

As the rattle was annoying, my trusty tin snips and I have removed it! Whistle

I will replace both sides with new ones later this year when the weather is warmer as I plan on changing my discs and pads anyway. Alltho the other side is tight I might as well do them both together. Reformed

My one corroded through at the fastening points - I also used the tin snips to cut it off - those 16mm carrier bolts where too tight (broke a socket) so I give up - I was going to fit a new spash guard in the warmer weather to - that was a year ago - must do it some day Whistle

I had the exact same problem the other day, This can be fixed without removing the brake disc etc. Simply get a large diameter washer for each bolt that the tin splash guard has seperated from. Undo the bolts and redo with the washer in inplace and tighten. Its a tight finger sqeeze to do,but saves so much time.

You have to remove the hub assembly to replace the back plates, easier said then done.

My suggestion is to cut the new plates with a hacksaw, slip them on and then put a small weld on the cut to hold it in place

for those that don't know, never ever weld (especially arc weld) on a vehicle without disconnecting the battery and or alternator - otherwise it is more than likely you will blow it or both.

Um Embarassed ....Discovery (Mine luckily!) welding rear sill.....could see flames behind patch I was welding, thought I'll just blow that out (probably fed the flames! Laughing ) Anyway, flames don't go away, so open door to see flames up the side trim and headlining! Shocked

Luckily I had extinguisher! Phew!


(£200 worth of secondhand parts later, Discovery was back to normal. Driving around with burnt out (smelly) interior was a new experiance! )

Noticed this on my FF yesterday and I think I will go down the tin snips route. Just going to go Screwfix this morning to invest in one.
Do I need to remove the wheel if I am just cutting the guard off or can to be done with the wheel on?
