On both our FFRR 4.4 TDV8 - I change BOTH Diff Oils Front & Rear - every 10,000 miles ( its a easy job )

as you will see on the Landrover service schedule is clearly states - Every 10 years !

You will know I am sure - when you drain the Diff fluid out:

Rear Diff ( Castrol SAF-OX - 75W/90 ) - it holds 1.14 liters ( note vehicle must be on level ground when re filling )

Front Diff ( Castrol SAF-OX - 75W/90 ) - it holds 0.75 liters ( note vehicle must be on level ground when re filling )

The Rear Diff oil is so Clear & Clean - almost like new ( 10,000 miles on )
The Front Diff oil is dark colour ( 10,000 miles on )

The whole point is - surely the Front Diff oil has had more work to do and has aged - "would you leave the front diff oil for 10 years - mileage of around 100,000 miles based on 12,000 miles a year".

That said - would you leave the Diff oils in for say........ 30,000 miles or 50,000 miles !!! - I Don't Think So !!!

I would suggest you change the front diff oil as often as you can as I do - oil is oil and they should wear the same ?

I'm with you, change it often, it can't hurt... what surprises me is that when I changed my diff fluids, (2002) which had probably never been done, they were both the same colour, not new looking but certainly not black...

Can't really understand why the oil would go black, engine oil does because of the combustion gasses... none in the diff..!! or does the later front diff have a clutch type locker in it...??? Pete

My take on why the oil turns black or at least dark is water gets in some how either through the breather are indirectly as condensation and corrodes the casing or innards , the oil in my eDiff was revolting and clutch travel was down to about 50% , since changing the oil the clutch travel has stabilized. There is also a tradition of eDiffs failing here in Australia that I never heard of in the same numbers in the UK , possibly people have been overfilling them but it's hard to tell . 2008 MY Supercharged

Is it possible that someone has added a spoonful of oil dag ?
Graphite powder mixed in oil instantly changes hypoid to jet black, but works wonders to lubricate any moving gears like diffs etc.
