Adding Oil to Gearbox

Hi guys,

Newbie here over from the RRS forum. I have recently acquired a FF 2003 4.4 Vogue. I have noticed an ever so slight vibration under load and wish to add Dr Tranny instant shudder fix.

On the RRS, it can be done from the engine side. Is this possible on the FF also? I had a look and I am struggling to find the location to do this?

Also, is it easy to check the gearbox oil on these?

If you have a search on here there are a few articles on gearbox oil change, also look in the wiki on the top right of the page lots of info in there.

Dr Tranny instant shudder fix is like 50ml, if you adding couple tubes of this you should be fine.

to add this stuff you will need to jack up the drivers side uk so the car is leaning over, and loosen the fill bolt a little.

start the car while on the jack stands and remove fill plug, pour in the stuff your using and close within at least 3-5mins as when the gear box oil get hot it will start pooring out the fill plug.

need to do this when engine is stone cold..

Note though what your doing will only help short term, if you torque converter is making noise it needs replacing. 2003 Range Rover 4.4 Litre V8 - Adriatic blue

Thanks for the reply.

I wanted to check if the oil was low or not. I put it on the ramp with the car switched on. Opened the gearbox oil filler nut and ended up putting in 3.5 litres before it started to come out of the filler hole Shocked Shocked Shocked
Is that pretty low?

The range rover gearbox is not checked by oil coming out of the filler hole (like 95% cars), so you have most likely over filled it.

Need to read some of the guides to changing it correctly. they are easy to overfill. 2003 Range Rover 4.4 Litre V8 - Adriatic blue

Uh oh Shocked Shocked .

I read most of the guides and it was related to an oil change rather than a topup. Is it actually overfilled? It drives as smooth as its been since I have had it

I read on another forum that its not possible to overfill the 5 Speed gearbox

Reading a few posts on here the gearbox oil is full when it starts leaking out of the filler plug as long as the engine is on.

I cycled through the gears to ensure the oil was in the TC and also ensured it was on level ground.

Still likely to be overfilled? There was abit of thump in the gear changes occasionally and this has now gone.

Seems should be ok, if the engine was running and had little drop coming from fill hole.

although if you gearbox oil was the low must been leaking somewhere. as adding 3.5 litre is alot.

You either had a leak or it wasn't filled correctly in the first place by somebody who has repaired or serviced it.
The procedure is in Rave and yes vehicle level engine running and transmission temp up to 50 degrees from memory and fill until over flows filler hole and cycling the gears.

Oh and don't use anything other than Mobil LT71141 to top up or it's direct equivalent or you are pooped.
It wouldn't be a bad idea to do a complete oil and filter change at some point as the fluid would have been working overtime if it was that low. Only use an OEM filter if you do. Smile
