The BMW 740d stat is an 88 deg version of the stat that fits the M62 engine, just doesn't have the heater, otherwise it's a straight swap with no need to mod anything which is what I wanted. Anyway I took the induction pipe off as well as the engine cover, still managed to damage myself. Mind you I usually do when I have a spanner in my hand. Drives:

After trying in vain to find a cheaper alternative to the conversation kit the dollar/pound exchange rate improved and I ordered mine. I was also concerned that the higher temp was a positive design and shouldn't be messed with. After lots of reading I am convinced it will not do anything negative including decreased fuel mileage. I have a pin hole radiator leak that I was going to fix at the same time I changed the thermostat but I am curious to see if the drop in pressure will have any affect on the rate of leak. |

The change from a 200kPa cap to a 140kPa cap certainly reduced my coolant loss. I still haven't got around to fitting the new radiator I bought before Christmas. Ron B. VK2OTC

My IID tool brings up this fault code. Does this mean I have the lower temperature stat? Not Galway but Balmoral green actually 148,000 miles |

Not necessarily. You could have a faulty circuit/thermostat. Have you visually inspected the connection? |

I agree with the Doc, it's either you do have the mod or you have a faulty circuit within the 'proper' thermostat.

RAVE says the thermostat heating element is triggered under load. Does this mean when you accelerate quickly? If so then maybe that circuit could be used to trigger a warning light such as flashing $$$ or £££!. Maybe a recording of sirens or McLaren P1? |

I did the kit today. One thing to mention at least for me is that allen bolt head use. Although the. Standard head bolt will go on 99% of the way there is a bolt head off the block that makes getting that last 1% tightening impossible with the 1/4 drive 10mm socket. The Allen head was a must for me to get it tight enough. |

That's interesting... mine was fine with the four normal bolts, mind you I did use a thin wall deep 10mm socket so maybe that's the difference.... |

Yes I'm sure socket wall thickness is the key. The 1/4 inch drive socket is smaller than the 3/8 but mine was just not enough. |
