Low Coolant Temperature + Current Drain

Hi All,

I have a 2004 L322 Td6. 3 problems have appeared in very close order.

1. The coolant temperature after a 45 min run at 50 - 70 mph is only 59 deg C/138 deg F (according to ODB) and the temp. guage barely reaches the start of the normal range.

2. When the outside air is less than 4 deg C and the engine is switched off, the FBH fan starts up and blows grey/blue smoke.

3. There is a large current drain when the engine is off. I found the circuit protected by fuse 27 was drawing 2.5A so a relay interrupter was fitted to isolate this circuit on switch off. Now another current draw has started.

In olden days, a low coolant temperature meant change the thermostat. But with enough electronics under the hood to run a space shuttle, what should I check first?

Cheers

Gary

Welcome, Thumbs Up
Low coolant temperature, engine thermostat, egr thermostat or transmission oil cooler thermostat. It's really up to you which you change first as all of them will cause a low coolant temperature if faulty.
I'd be inclined to do egr thermostat first, then engine thermostat and finally transmission oil cooler thermostat.

Hi NiceDayForIt,

Thanks for the advice. I have found the EGR Thermostat so I'll fit a replacement.

Cheers

No, I haven't found the EGR thermostat. Where is it? The manual shows it at the top of the radiator but I can't see it. I'll check I have the correct manual!

Cheers

Here it is, just remove top front engine cover by the radiator and all will be revealed:

If you are going after the main thermostat check the wiki .

Hi Joe90,

Thanks for the diagram. Now I can fix this on Saturday. I've been through the workshop manual I downloaded but cannot find a similar diagram. Which manual did you find this in?

Is the EGR thermostat (the one that allows the main engine coolant thermostat to be bypassed) built into this valve or is it located some where else?

Cheers

Gary

from RAVE

You buy the whole piece with the thermostat inside.

Worth looking for BMW variant of the EGR stat (referred to in RAVE as the Thermal valve (EGR), under Emission Control) for TD6 as much cheaper than JLR (sorry Dan)

Main thermostat requires removal of viscous fan, fan shroud, EGR gubbins, air intake, turbo hose. While/If you are there it may be worth releasing the tension on the auxiliary belt and checking the bearings on the water pump. .

Hi Joe90,

Just downloaded the RAVE document. It is far better than the workshop manuals I have. I'll chech the EGR unit tomorrow. In the wiki, an EGR blanking kit is mentioned. This one:

In your opinion, should I just replace the whole EGR unit with this blanking part?

Cheers

When I had the egr thermostat issue on my bm it ran up to temp ok on the motorway but dropped down to just above the first line on the stat when running in stop, start traffic or plodding around the back roads.
Changed it out and has been good as gold since.
Not sure if the engine in the Td6 is euro 4, if it is I blanked the egr on my 330 and it threw up the eml as it monitors the gases. (Nice engine mine has 176,000 on it and still going well)
So you may need to get the egr mapped out to sort this, but if you go down that road you may as well remap it for fuel economy and power.
Sure someone will be along in a bit to conferm if it is euro 4 or not and if they run the same BMW software. 2004 4.4V8 Vogue
