It's behind the battery, behind a plastic cover. A bit fiddly to get to, but not too bad.

What is the problem? When mine was faulty, the wipers would stop working occasionally which I believe was because the circuit that senses when they are stuck to the windscreen was triggered. Replacing the relay solved it for me. When I took the relay apart, the contacts were badly pitted with arcing. I guess the wiper circuit motor is quite a high current device. Current: 2010 Range Rover L322

Hi Steve,

The wipers don't go down all the way when turned off, but stay about 1/3 up windscreen. My dealer told me to pull out then plug back in the relay.

OK, well the wiper relay certainly plays a role in sending a trigger that they have reached the parked position, however I cant see that simply pulling the relay and putting it back in again will make any difference. As you needed to remove the battery to get to the relay, it won't be driveable as it is.

If it was me, I'd try what they said and then, assuming it didn't solve the problem, carefully take the relay plastic 'hood' off. Once off, you'll see the relay contacts, which I'd expect to be badly pitted. You can clean them up with some emery board, although I would think this is probably only a temporary solution. A replacement relay is the better option. At least cleaning the contacts will help you know whether this is the problem or not. Current: 2010 Range Rover L322

Hi Steve,
I cannot locate the windshield wiper relay. I pull the rubber pad behind the battery
and there is a metal wall. Am I doing something wrong?

Mike

Number 9 in this diagram. For reference, number 8 is the headlamp washer relay.

On my MY2002, it was behind a plastic clip-on panel, behind the battery. Not entirely certain where on your 2011. Possible that the sides are reversed, I guess, as mine is UK spec RHD - but that seems very unlikely.

Thanks Steve,

Mine is a 2008 and I haven't taken the battery out, but looking behind the battery, there is a rubber pad with a black plastic nut. If I pull that back the pad there is a metal wall and I cannot see any relays. My dilemma. This is a pic of what it looks like behind the battery. Does it look like yours? If, so I will pull battery. Mike

No diagram but I just pulled the cover off the big plastic box with the 10 torx nuts in front of the battery and found this. One of these has to be the windshield wiper relay wouldn't you think?

Mike,

I thought there might be some differences between the model years, but I've now looked at the available workshop manuals for the three relevant time windows - 2002-2005; 2006-2009; 2010+ and all appear to be the same.

I know that it's behind the battery on MY 2002 - you can't even see the plastic cover without taking the battery out. Even when you've taken the battery out, it's a little bit fiddly to see the clips to take the cover off.

The following picture is from the 2006 - 2009 workshop manual (link in the wiki and well worth a download). If you actually have a 2008, that should cover your model, although there appears to be identical pictures in the other 2 versions of the workshop manual as well - right down to the colour of the paintwork of the car in question.

In this case, the arrowed relay is labelled as the intermittent wipe relay, although in other versions its labelled as the front wiper relay. I'm sure one of those is right - and the two relays should be right next to each other.

Stan - for reasons best known to some Land Rover or BMW Design Engineer, the front wiper relays are not put with all the other relays and fuses in the waterproof box of electronics in the engine compartment. It would be so much easier if they were. They're up against the bulkhead, behind the battery and the only way to get at them is to remove the battery first, then remove a plastic cover to even see them. Once the cover is off, it all should be reasonably obvious. Current: 2010 Range Rover L322
