Hey Pete, is the temperature sensor in the stat wiring that you remove? If so do you still get a coolant temp reading?

Hi,

The temp sensor is located elsewhere so leaving out the thermostat plug will not effect the temp reading.

That bit in Rave is a bit ambiguous, there is one temp sensor measuring the water at it's hottest part of the system, where it leaves the engine, and as Simon says it's not combined with the electric thermostat. There is another temp sender in the bottom hose outlet in the rad, which is the coldest part of the system. The internal temp gauge uses the top one, the bottom one can be read with diagnostic tools... Thumbs Up Pete

Thank you Pete, I've been watching the diagnostics in my last journey. The FFRR started getting warm so pulled over and put the heating in high with the ignition on (thanks to the new battery!) plugged in the diagnostics and the coolant temp was at 115 and the radiator temp at 5 deg.

The diagnostics threw out a stat sensor fault as well.

Limped home with the heating up and windows wide open and the rad temp didn't move north of 7 deg. While the coolant hovered from 95-100.

Having gone through your write up I'm thinking there may be a leak through the stat sensor - if there is and I rip out the internals and do the mod is there a way to seal the sensor housing?

If the rad never got higher than 7 deg then you have no water flow around the system, the other temp got cooler because the water would be stationary and as such the heat will have dissipated into the surrounding metal work. The temps inside the engine will have been very high.

It's either a stuck thermostat, broken water pump or blocked system (probably the rad)

Don't drive it till it's fixed or you could do the head gaskets...

Doesn't sound like a leak through the stat to me but if it is there are lots of substances that would seal it, but for how long is anyone's guess.. Pete

40 deg C/104 deg F today and the water temp got up to 104 deg C/219 deg F a couple of times in traffic. Once moving, the temp dropped to 102 deg C/216 deg F.

Did my 80 degree mod at the weekend along with the top hose, might just be me but it seams so much happier and doesn't smell like Chernobyl after I've been on a run now either

I did the mod and I couldn't believe the difference either, it was like all of the strain was being released from the engine and it just sounded and felt more relaxed, it was odd...

Really easy to do too, i didn't need to mod my housing for the bleed valve and didn't remove the fan or cowling either and as I used a 1/4 drive ratchet and extension it was really easy to undo and replace the 4 bolts and didn't need the cap head bolt.
Regarding the modification to the old housing , i used a dremel with the little reinforced cut off discs and then a coarse sanding drum again in the dremel and job was done.
The old stat spring is under quite a bit of compression so does ping a bit when you cut through the supports.
Definitely more relaxed even on idle now

Anybody out there who ordered this part yet ? Its the BEHR thermostat model TI 3288 for the 740 diesel.

BMW part number is OEM NUMBER 11512248542 THERMOSTAT / opening at 88 degrees...

Has the exact same dimensions and design as the BEHR thermistat TM 12 105 --- this is OEM number 1153 1 436 386 / for BMW / opening at 105 degrees ... which is the same as "our" original OE PEL000060 / for LAND ROVER

i ordered one of the vemo ones but didn't use it as i fitted the 80 degree mod, it is still in my garage in it's box.

When you look at the actual casting it says Behr on it.

The blamking disc that says 88 on it is where the heater would normally fit.
It cost me just under £90 to get it to the uk via amazon so the 80 degree mod is cheaper
