Many years ago I had a Ford Consul Uto that was exactly like that. I ignored it and it was fine for the whole time I owned the car ( maybe 30,000 miles). But, it produced a lot less power than a Rangie, and was worth less than the cost of a pint of ATF! |

My Audi A5 used to do this if left standing for a while but happened in reverse also really annoying.. It only had 20k miles on it.The dealer did not appear too concerned oh how I hated that A5. They said it was just a valve that sometimes slow to engage if left standing or something like that .Just dont be tempted to do any bank robberies Present :2008 TDV8 HSE

An obvious first assumption is that this is a hydraulic issue (fluid viscous when cold, drained back into the sump overnight, etc.). However, the fact that reverse gear engages immediately points away from this.

There’s a guy over on Xoutpost.com http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/x5-...sue-2.html who reckons he’s fixed his 1st gear engagement delay by replacing the fluid filter. Unlike in the 5HP24, where it’s held on by two screws, the 5L40-E filter is just a push fit into the seals in the suction port and he says that his came loose over time and dropped down into the sump.

That could be interesting. As I had the filter and fluid changed about 2000 miles ago. Maybe the new filter has slipped out. No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

If its not used in manual mode maybe try flicking it into sport and then 1st and drive that way or a mile or two and then slot it back into Drive for the rest of the trip?? |

This is getting old, but I have exactely the same issues. Will not engage in D for 2-4 seconds in the morning. Everything perfect besides this.
