Hi, Personally I prefer to put it in neutral when stationary , the gearbox locks up at 55 mph , generally I let the gearbox do it's own thing, but if I'm driving on the flat at @ 50mph I do put it into manual and get the box locked up.

I think that the torque converter lock up is available in 3rd, 4th and 5th gears. I let it do it's own changes in traffic , just 'force' the lock up if I'm traveling at just under the 55mph lock up for any length of time. For normal use leave in D and if stationary for any time, slip it into neutral. Some folk recommend leaving in D when stationary , but for my personal preference it feels better if it's in N rather than slipping/straining in D whist waiting for traffic.

I generally leave it in D. Once it's nicely warmed up, I'll go for N at traffic lights. I sometimes will slide it over to S to prep for a quick overtake. They're nice transmissions and seem good at knowing what gear to be in when working properly . |

Don't know about these later boxes but the old three speed in the Classic didn't drive the oil pump when in neutral, so putting it in neutral when stationary used to heat up and damage the box as the oil wasn't pumping around it and the cooler...

I have mine in D most of the time, unlike Pete, sometimes it is in R and sometimes in P dont know how he gets out of a parking space to answer OP, have always left in D when going forward and no issues yet |

I am sure there was a huge thread on this where RRPhil's opinion was leaving in D would not damage the box in any way.

Handbook recommends moving to N when stopped in traffic, and applying the handbrake, much the same as you would do with a manual. Having been on a safer driving course a while back I have got into the habit of doing this.

Leave it in Drive and handbrake for me, no different to it running slowly in drive except you've stopped it with handbrake.
