How to use the auto in traffic

I have read on another thread that the L322 GM box heats up quite a bit.
So i have just got my 2003 vogue.
I had to drive in traffic today. What is the best way to drive in slow and stop start traffic.
To prevent the TC from slipping too much is it best to use the sport and manual mode?
Does this lock the TC more effectively?

Hi, Personally I prefer to put it in neutral when stationary , the gearbox locks up at 55 mph , generally I let the gearbox do it's own thing, but if I'm driving on the flat at @ 50mph I do put it into manual and get the box locked up.

First thing I did with mine was to have oil flush done and a new filter. These gearboxes are know for their chocolate internals , so keeping the oil fresh and cool is good.

Yup
its booked for a gearbox flush next week.
The gear changes are so smooth you cant feel them.
If you are in stop start traffic which i am about to go in again, would you put the car in manual mode? Is it a good idea to shift between first and second?

I think that the torque converter lock up is available in 3rd, 4th and 5th gears. I let it do it's own changes in traffic , just 'force' the lock up if I'm traveling at just under the 55mph lock up for any length of time. For normal use leave in D and if stationary for any time, slip it into neutral. Some folk recommend leaving in D when stationary , but for my personal preference it feels better if it's in N rather than slipping/straining in D whist waiting for traffic.

Cheers

Simon

I generally leave it in D. Once it's nicely warmed up, I'll go for N at traffic lights. I sometimes will slide it over to S to prep for a quick overtake. They're nice transmissions and seem good at knowing what gear to be in when working properly .

Don't know about these later boxes but the old three speed in the Classic didn't drive the oil pump when in neutral, so putting it in neutral when stationary used to heat up and damage the box as the oil wasn't pumping around it and the cooler...

Anyone know how these later ones work...??

Personally I never knock it into neutral, I leave it in D all the time and it seems happy enough.... Pete

I am sure there was a huge thread on this where RRPhil's opinion was leaving in D would not damage the box in any way.

After that, the general consus seemed to be that shifting to N each time you came to a stop would likely cause more damage by prematurely wearing a particular bearing (the name of which escapes me at present)

Whish I could find the thread..... 2007 Zermatt Silver TDV8 Vogue SE - now sold but was a great car!

Handbook recommends moving to N when stopped in traffic, and applying the handbrake, much the same as you would do with a manual. Having been on a safer driving course a while back I have got into the habit of doing this.

Good practice and good driving to go N and handbrake on.

What I do enjoy is watching folks with manuals failing on this in traffic and on hills, holding the car on the clutch, or stalling, or rolling back (sometimes 2/3 feet!) before taking up drive (no handbrake used!) Guess it doesn't help with newer stop start models and the electronic handbrake!

Going OT a bit:
Was wondering, can the driver turn off the stop / start system when in traffic - when it is hot and you have the air con on? otherwise no aircon? .

So the consensus is, do what you like it doesn't make much difference... Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Tim, all the ones I've been in you can turn it off... Pete

Leave it in Drive and handbrake for me, no different to it running slowly in drive except you've stopped it with handbrake.
I would rather do that than wear out the XYZ/park inhibit switch or selector keep putting it into neutral (already been replaced once). The switch is more likely to wear than anything in the transmission!

eh? so you're leaving it in drive, then using the handbrake to stop it moving? Or have I read that wrong? Dan
