2003 Td6 Fueling issue

Drove my car and went for a 50 mile ride to work. On reaching the entrance barriers to work , when slowing , the car began to 'jerk' quite violently. Also did the same in reverse when parking up. However , whilst fretting all shift about how it would be at 2200 hrs to drive home thinking gearbox, recovery etc , to my surprise , it drove faultlessly ! Went out yesterday and started to do the same again , so gave it a boot and it also came in at 50-60 mph ! When stopped I opened the bonnet and you can see the engine 'shaking' at idle , so this confirmed the fault was not the gearbox ! Very Happy
Today , when cold I started the car and again you could see the engine was 'missing' on one cylinder. Took all covers off to access the injectors and wiring loom and by removing and replacing one injector plug at a time I have found it is No5 cylinder that is not working. I have checked the continuity at the injector with No1 injector and the readings are comparible (40 ohms - No1 was new 2 years ago due to leaking back and making the car hard to start). Did a continuity test of the wiring loom after tracing the correct feed cables and this also seems to be ok with good continuity. The wiring loom itself looks like new with no cracking or chaffing etc. I have tested the supply voltage from the ECU to the injector at the ECU end whilst running and I get 9.6v DC . I have put injector cleaner in over the last month , but as the injector does not seem to be firing will obviously have no effect. My question , as I have no dedicated Range Rover diagnostic software , is :- New injector (which I am edging towards) or a new wiring loom ? I would appreciate and comments , advice re this conundrum Smile Oh , the car has done 157k miles Smile

Hiya , Looks like you have covered the loom side quite well, would it be an option to swap an injector and see if it moves the problem?

Good luck

Simon

I have considered this , as I still have my other injector that was leaking back but ran ok. I have found a specialist diesel garage near me so I am going to get them do some diagnosis rather than dive straight in and change bit by bit , hit and miss Thumbs Up

Sounds like the typical td6 injector failure, many threads on here about it. '55 Java Black Vogue

Mine had the same symptoms a couple of weeks ago, cured by replacing 2 injectors. 2004 Vogue TD6 - Remapped Smile

I have changed No1 injector before and that did not require the inlet manifold removing.Question is , if I obtain a new injector and do it myself , do you require a new manifold gasket when rebuilding it all again ? Looking around for an injector , and if its listed for the BMW X5 the prices seem a lot less than if it says Range Rover in front of the description - especially on E bay anyway Smile

Not sure about the manifold gasket, due to lack of time, got a garage to do it. However as far as sourcing injectors, was given the heads up on here about Diesel Jones (P F Jones) in Manchester. Rebuilt injectors are £96 on an exchange basis. They delivered next day too. 2004 Vogue TD6 - Remapped Smile

Not sure about rebuilt/refurbed injectors (I have my old one for refurbing). I can get a new one for 130 so to put an old one back in for 30 pound less , how much mileage before problems again ? Getting a warranty with them is fine but I would only want to do the job once Smile Fortunately the Range Rover is not my everyday car (only did 1200 miles last year) , so If I do require a manifold gasket I can order one and wait for it to arrive as its not a VOR (vehicle off road) situation Wink

I have exactly that problem and you have described the symptoms to a tee, I had a knackered injector which was fine until you gave it some power then it shook. New injector cleared it up.
