100% say get rid, fit good quality air filter and swirl breather say hello to 30 ish mpg but as it drives quicker its more like 28mpg these days at 128,000 miles but better than 23-4 when I got it at 102,000 miles.

Is there a link to another post to show how to remove or clean? Would like to give it a go but or at least see if its something i could turn my had too.

No body bothers to clean a TD6 EGR, you can get a new bypass for under £30... by the time you've brought the cleaner and faffed about....is it really worth it?

Removing is fairly straight forward.....

Bonnet in service position, optional but recommended

Remove Air box, 2 x 13mm ( M8 ) nuts on bulkhead, one is next to the battery jumper point, and slide forward and lift, cos the bloody ABS pump is in the way

Remove engine top cover

Then at the front R/H side of engine you'll see the EGR, remove the small rubber vacuum hose, loosen and slide off the jubilee clip from the small exhaust pipe, and the large jubilee clip holding the intercooler pipe on....

Now it is possible to remove the 4 bolts that hold the EGR to the inlet manifold at this stage... but it's a real big pain, and it is by far easier to remove the whole inlet manifold..

You'll need to pop the rubber bungs on the top of the manifold, and remove the nuts that are beneath.... they are M7 and require an 11mm socket, dipping the socket in some grease before will save a lot of

then it's the bolts by the injectors and it will come off.... there are some sensors on the manifold that require the leads to be disconnected, so don't yank it up

Also it's been a while since I had these bits off so I can't remember if the Air Filter cover has to come off as well

to clean there are various options but Mr Muscle Oven cleaner seams to be popular on the web.... but don't leave it on the EGR for long as it attacks aluminium.... and that's what the EGR is made of..... personally I'd fit a bypass, but have a go at the manifold with the Mr Muscle.... but don't let the wife catch you... or you'll have another job waiting when you've finished D'OH!!  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

FYI if you haven't already downloaded "2002-2006 workshop 'REPAIR' manual RAVE" in wiki, DO IT! it will tell you everything you need to know about taking bits off of ffrr's....... if your lucky you can sometimes find the instructions to reassemble  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Yeah....well......i knew that.

To convince yourself that it will be worthwhile do a comparison test.

Observe how the car drives over a normal week (but you know this already so you can skip this first week), then
Unplug the vacuum tube going into the EGR valve and stick a golf tee into it (to satisfy the engine management computer), and cover the vacuum pipe going into the valve (to keep it clean, this can just be a few turns of insulation tape).
Observe how the car drives over a normal week without EGR.
Re connect the EGR
Observe how the car drives over a normal week with EGR restored.

Buy and fit the blanking kit now that you know how much better the car performs without EGR.
Get this style that blanks both ends of the system to avoid the problem described below.



As a side note, on my TD6 after towing for 20,000km with the blanking done the still connected exhaust feeder pipe cracked near the lower connection with the exhaust pipe going to the turbo. An additional blanking plate was fabricated and fitted onto the engine pipe under the flange for this feeder pipe to completely complete the blanking.

Hello all, which EGR blanking kit would you recommend ?

Thought I'd resurrect this old post guys, after a house move and other time consuming things I've now got more time to spend on the old girl (the FF, not the missus )

I've already had it remapped (TD6) and was talking in work about blanking the EGR but a guy said you need to do it before its remapped, otherwise you get issues? Never heard it before, is he talking rubbish?

Right, now I finally have time on my hands i'm getting around to doing all the small piddly jobs I've been putting off (Theres loads.... so expect more simpleton questions the next coming week or 2)

Should I still blank off the EGR? Only asking as Stan said to keep it incase it becomes an MOT inspection item?

Egr removed on my td6 by somebody ( ) with fan and shroud on unless you know where to look difficult to see not there, past mot first rev couple weeks ago.

Miggit, Ive downloaded your link and unzipped it But cant seme to open anything now its unzipped? Am looking for a 'run.exe' type option, but cant find anything?? what am i doing wrong please?

been disconnected on mine for 9 years and about 60000 miles, no ill effects, just pulled off the pipe and blocked it, maybe should have done more but i diddnt and its ok to date (touch wood) 2011 4.4 tdv8 autobiography black
