Tdv8 coolant reservoir level

The coolant tank has a marker indicating when coolant should be added. It was below that level but still had coolant at the bottom. So I added 1 lt of premix and by next stop its back to the same level. Is that a problem? I haven't noticed a leak. ______________________________

I just had a closer look. The tank has a couple of marks and words "cold fill range". The tank looks like honey comb. It has coolant sitting at the bottom of the lower mark. ______________________________

I would keep topping up until the level is good (I would aim for at least half way between the min and max cold full lines). Then drive it and keep an eye on the coolant - if the level keeps dropping you probably have a leak of some sort. It may be the level was just so low that you adding a small amout didn't really change things.

Thanks. I added 1 lt to top it up. It was above the top mark when cold. Then drove it for 4 hrs and it dropped back. ______________________________

Could have been air in the system from being low in the first place. I would fill again and keep an eye on it.

Can you smell coolant when the engine is hot?

That's what was happening to me with the thermostat housing leak, it was losing a similar amount of coolant but could not see it running down the back of the block till it was quite bad. It must have mostly evaporated, could smell it though.

Hey rar110

Did you find a leak?

I seem to be having the same issue.

If you can't find the leak, have it tested to ensure it's not the head gasket - that is expensive to fix.

I can just make out water and red residue around the bottom of the oil filter.

Is that the symptoms of thermostat housing leak?

Yes, the leak runs from the housing along the valley and down the back of the block. When it's leaking slow the coolant evaporates before it can leave a puddle on the ground, but you can smell it, poke around the thermostat housing with an inspection, it's very difficult to isolate.

That would leave tell tale red stains as well?

That's what I look out for, but the loss of 1ltr is quite a bit.

Gday gents, I'm not sure I have a leak.

The reservoir has coolant at the front and bottom of the tank. I can't understand how the tank works. There's lots of compartments in there. Here's a pic from a month ago.

My thermostat housing was replaced about 3 years ago. I hope the replaced the grommet. ______________________________

Ps, I wouldn't be driving it, looks like the tank is empty and there's no indicator to say how much coolant is down in the engine.

Can you see red coolant residue around the bottom of the oil filter?
