Strange Ignition fault

Hi guys,

Strange one for Christmas. 2008 TDV8 Vogue. Battery drained to the point where it wouldn’t start the car (doors open, lights on etc) anyway, disconnected the battery, charged it up overnight (should say it’s a Bosch S5 019 about 2yrs old).

This morning, reconnected the battery, and started her, no problem. Left her running for 10-15 mins. Turned her off and now neither key will turn in the ignition lock, unless I disconnect the battery and go through the same routine. I checked with my IIDTool and got the following errors: "Magnetic driver open circuit or short to ground”, “Securing magnet fault” and "Locking operating error”.

Anyone seen these errors before?

Mike

Bin the battery!

Changed almost every Bosch S5 I’ve ever seen on a FF as they do seem to fail often... Rolling Eyes

I personally would only ever fit a JLR battery sir Bow down

Thanks Pete.....that was the only way I could get her restarted......disconnect - reconnect procedure.

Craig - that's interesting since the battery has a 5 year guarantee.....seems little point putting another S5 in if it's going to fail again! Big Cry

Well, replaced the battery earlier today (thanks to a 5 year warranty from Bosch) and guess what?

Correct......no difference.

I did the steering wheel reset but the only way i can get the key to turn in the ignition is to disconnect/reconnect the battery.

Something's throwing the errors up and despite clearing them with IIDTool, they come back.

Most frustrating !

Did they check the battery & confirm it was dodgy before replacing it ?

Was the new battery fully charged before fitting it ?

Hi Alistair,

Yes to both questions I'm afraid.

If I reconnect the battery, she'll start and I can switch her of and on as often as I like, but once I remove the key, that's me screwed until I disconnect/reconnect again.

Even though I clear the codes with my iidtool, they come back again.

Running out of ideas now.

Mike

Sounds like some kind of problem with the ignition switch - and it's keeping other things running which may have screwed up your battery.

Time to take it to someone who knows what they are doing.

Slightly weird one as I thought they did away with the steering column lock on the '08 models along with the key but check this thread out in case yours is an '07 and late registered:
http://www.rangerovers.net/forum/6-range-r...ealer.html
It sounds like a steering lock problem as the magnetic lock error codes and the symptoms are the same as suggested above.

The basics as I understand it are:
The solenoid that locks the steering column can unlock the column with the key first placed in but due to the solenoid failing or getting sticky it can't lock it again when the key is removed and throws up an error. The next time you place the key in it won't even attempt an unlock as the error is present. If you remove the power to the steering column ECU (either by battery disconnect or remove fuse 18 that supplies the column ECU) then it resets itself and you can use the key again.

It seems the dealer fix is a new steering column as the column solenoid or ECU (which can also give issues) are not available separately.
There are some DIY fixes or repairs. Removing fuse 18 and replacing every time or wiring in a switch which does the same is a get around. You can also modify the steering column and drill a hole through to the solenoid and apply lubrication , the lack of which is often why the solenoid sticks. Details of this fault and procedure are explained here: http://www.blackbox-solutions.com/photos/L322lock.pdf

This is assuming that is your issue, try removing and replacing fuse 18 in the meantime and seek out a proper diagnosis with someone who knows what they are doing!

Thanks guys, it does sound like the steering lock as mentioned above, I'm just not a fan of coincidences........it's been working fine until last week when the battery drained.

A faulty ignition switch can keep the electrics running

I would be putting the battery failure down to that rather than the other way around

Be careful that it doesn't drain the new one

Just out of curiosity, Have you tried a spare key to see what happens?

When you put the key in, before you turn it, you should hear a solenoid disengage the steering lock. It works on the immobiliser transponder in the key.

If you can't hear that or you hear a clicking noise like it trying to disengage, then you have narrowed down the culprit somewhat. What does it sound like when you do it the first time after a reset? There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

First thing i did was try the spare key......it has the same result, so not likely to be the key transponder.

After a reset, i can hear the lock come off when i insert the key.......and providing i leave the key in, then, no problem.

It's only when i remove the key that the lock comes back on, but won't go off if i reinsert either key again.

I can clear the codes with IIDTool, but they come back again as soon as i remove the key.
