Think I have it sorted.

If you look at your picture pietertje, I have one more relay (yellow) to the top left of the group - so with a green below and a green to its right.

However, when I pulled that, its not a relay, but simply a bridge - there are only two contacts. So I switched a 'proper' relay over to that socket and hey presto, sockets go off with ignition!

SO i'll just go grab a new relay and that should be me.

Question for you though pietertje, is how is yours working at all without that relay or bridge. Can you look real close to that socket and see if anyone has crudely bridged it in some way?

The problem is if there is indeed a bridge somewhere then putting a relay in will not overcome it. It will still be bridged and you won't be any further on finding out what is in place. John

Just found this in the workshop manual.



It says the location of different relais in the trunk. Also says cigar lighter relay (where fitted)... Hmmmm....

So had another look at the car...

Any technician/electrician here that can help me point out what to check first? I'm not to good in understanding the electrical diagram.

So resume:

1. All my cigar/auxiliary sockets are live, even when there is no key in the ignition.
2. I checked to see if there was a relay installed in my rear fusebox, there is none.
3. Installed a relay in the cigar lighter relay socket, no succes.
4. The socket where the cigar lighter relay should (or could) be installed, is not bridged.

I have a multimeter, so I'm able to check different connections wires?

As I understand it the Socket in the rear luggage space is not a Cigar socket but an Auxiliary socket so it's operation will not be affected by the relay position on the rear fuseboard.
On my car there appears to be two cigar sockets and two auxiliary sockets.
I would have to spend sometime investigating this to give you any help.
If you require the luggage space socket to be ignition controlled irrespective of the rest it's not particularly difficult to achieve you simply need a 20A 4 pin relay, 20A cable and 5A cable and a bit of time.

You are right. There are 2 sigar sockets and 2 aux sockets. So the one in the rear an aux socket. I believe that also accounts for the one in the cubby box.

You can buy inline voltage sensitive relays. You plug them in between the fridge and the accessory socket and it will switch the fridge off when the car battery drops below a certain level.

I've had a look at the wiring diagrams and it appears the cigar sockets can be wired ignition controlled or not.
The variation seems to be achieved either by wiring the sockets directly from the fuseboard or using a bridge connector in the relay position.
The auxiliary sockets are wired directly from the fuseboard although I don't doubt someone will come along and say their's are ignition controlled.
If you get the relay, 2m of 20A cable and 2m of 5A cable in the meantime I will show you what to do in due course, just not today, I'm afraid I'm having problems walking at all.
I know what needs to be done it's just I need to check a couple of things in my car before I pass on advice.
Hopefully by tomorrow the tablets will have kicked in.

ZB, that is indeed another possibility. The only thing that would worry me is that any reduction in voltage if a FF is not helpful to it's continued operation.

@ zirconblue: I know... But I don't like them to much... I will be installing headrest screens in the near future and I want to connect them to the aux socket wiring (cubby box). In fact i'm not planning on using the sockets at all but only the wiring to them.. I don't like it to much when connectors stick out of the sockets. So I'm looking at a more permanent fix.

@ Nicedayforit: Thank you for willing to help. So mine are wired directly to the fuseboard since there is no relay or bridge. Will buy wires and relay this afternoon. Will any relay do?.
