gear box service

So this mornings job was to service the gearbox. I was getting concerned as my last long trip out I was getting a judding and booming sound between 25 and 30 also 50ish, common issue with the FF. So armed with lots of info on this forum, good saintv8 with his write up and in the wiki I took advantage of the good weather today to get on with it.

It's an easy job to do, but yesterday I had to get Mrs wd to buy a t27 torque socket a didn't have one in the tool box!

I'm not going to do a write up on how too as this has been done, but if your FF has even a slight judder and you know it's never had a filter and a filter change it is worth doing this to save issues later on as has been posted on other threads.

Drained the oil an only had this amount come out.

The pan, and magnets, no burnt smell of atf and not too bad on the magnets either.

Bit of sludge on magnet

Old atf and new atf side by side

The old filter, this has never been changed by looking at the date either.

Total amount of atf that came out of the box, pan and filter.

I even got the grass cut today Whistle If it dont work.......burn it!

If the IId tool cant fix it.......burn the FF.

If the FF cant be fixed......buy a Land Cruiser!

If the LC cant be fixed..............................................BUY a horse !!

Well thought I would up date this as a progress and not start another thread.

The box has been smooth changes and the ' cattle grid ' affect has gone, no rumbling at the 25 - 30 mph since the service so happy with that,

BUT, recently this last week I have noticed a slight 'slippage' or 'hesitation' effect at the 50-55 mph, no rumbling at all, this hesitation is not between 25-30mph or up any incline. Big Cry

So question ( I think I already know whats coming Whistle )

Is it worth trying 'DR tranny' or 'shudder fix' ?

Ive read up a bit on this and has 2 views on the ' fix in a tube'
Found this link on here http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic23921....=dr+tranny but I might cause more of an issue Big Cry

Not sure how to jump at the mo, I have had a quote to change the TC ( many thanks to Mrs Camtec Bow down Thumbs Up , I will be in touch)

what are views on this, short turm fix, bite the bullet or.......swap for a Landcruiser Embarassed Laughing If it dont work.......burn it!

If the IId tool cant fix it.......burn the FF.

If the FF cant be fixed......buy a Land Cruiser!

If the LC cant be fixed..............................................BUY a horse !!

Dr Tranny works, but it can't repair the damage. It may buy you some time though, but don't leave it too long. Thumbs Up Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

RRPhil is the expert in my book on this but it does seem logical to me.
Dr Tranny is just a friction modifier it's not a 'fix'.
All it will do is alter the friction properties of the ATF and stop the torque converter friction plates from vibrating due to being worn out, it 'fixes' the judder by masking the underlying problem.
So you add the Dr Tranny and keep on driving it. The judder has gone but it still continues to wear through the already worn out friction material and right through onto the metal. Now you have metal particles floating through the TC and gearbox which will totally Censored it. So you start with just needing a TC but end up with needing a TC and gearbox.

What you decide to do entirely depends on your situation.

You could stick in the Dr Tranny and hope it lasts another ??k miles knowing you'll need to replace both gearbox and TC when it dies.
You could change the TC now. I DIYed my TC change and it cost me just the ATF, filter and TC refurb so not much more than £300. Getting it done by an independent is around the £800-£1000 mark I think. That leaves you still with an old gearbox with likely 100k miles on it.
For £2000-£3000 you could get the whole gearbox and TC replaced which should last another 100k miles.

That's basically the upshot of it, though, in combination with the fluid change, the gearbox should be OK for a while. Dr Tranny managed to prolong my TC replacement on my 6HP for nearly 20k after a flush, but the flush was vital to preventing damage to the rest of the box - the TC was replaced ASAP once symptoms re-appeared. My understanding is that preventing the slippage helps to reduce the excess heat, so it does help to reduce damage somewhat. Thumbs Up

If convenient, I'd just replace the TC now, but otherwise, I'd add Dr Tranny, and prepare for a TC replacement in a few months time. Visiting from DISCO3.CO.UK

I know it's an old thread but may help others with any similar issues.

A few months back I towed a very heavy load, to much really but the FF pulled it the trailer and concrete slabs fine. Shocked
Move on two weeks ago, towing my old dead discovery on the flat bed to my daughter's boyfriend garage I get the dreaded judders at low speed, and 30mph ish, pulled fine though and a few days after this I towed my horse for a saddle fit at my friend's place.....and the judders at low speed, so service required me thinks.

Now I knew the box had its last service above, April 2015, I have not had any issues with judder after this and I didn't put in Dr tranny either, it's the same torque converter also.

Moving on, serviced the box, new oil and filter....(and serviced the engine while at it) but as much as it's smoother like before I still got what I thought was judder....and Dr tranny added also.
Nope she was miss firing, I had the engine light flicker momentarily and no fault codes showed up, kickdown showed this far more.
Changed the plugs, nfk BKR6EQUP and a short drive up the road and seems all is well....just need to hook up the trailer now.

As you can see, the gearbox oil was well in need of a changing again.

119000 miles.

 If it dont work.......burn it!

If the IId tool cant fix it.......burn the FF.

If the FF cant be fixed......buy a Land Cruiser!

If the LC cant be fixed..............................................BUY a horse !!
