Well got the new box fitted today, all went well, and what a difference.... silky smooth changes, pickup from rest is much, much better, the old torque convertor must have been well worn...

It really does feel like a new car, the silly grin is back on my face...!!!!

Thanks for everyone's thoughts and help, especially RRPhil, sorry this thread didn't turn out to be a rebuild but a swap.... Pete

Cheers

Yes it was the correct stuff this time, the old box had red oil in it when I bought it....

I bought 20ltrs of the stuff a few months ago to flush the old oil out and luckily had 9ltrs left, the new box took just over 8 to fill, the torque convertor is virtually impossible to drain fully so still had some in it...

Going to check the level again next week just to make sure....

Did 200 miles today, over to Manchester Airport and back and drove superb... Very Happy Very Happy Pete

Hi to all, I am removing my gearbox, same model as 'haylands' ( Bmw v8 )and wonder if anyone has removed a gearbox, and has any tips on getting the four flex plate to torque converter bolts out, as the front subframe is right in the way. I know how to remove them, just what tool has anyone had success with, ie an odd shaped ring spanner, or various sockets etc. I have to be careful not the round them off, and they are definitely not playing cricket today.

John, PM replied to..., I don't think you will round them off they are high tensile bolts, I used a 17mm 3/8 drive deep socket, they are a pain though.... Pete

Pretty sure they are 17mm, you need a deep 3/8 drive socket on about a 1ft ratchet, feed it in and work your hands round the sides and it is possible... they are high tensile bolts so you won't round them off, they are very tight though...

You will also need more room than you have with it on axle stands to remove the box it is very big and very heavy..

Good luck Pete

thanks so much Thumbs Up sure I need more room, but I think is very hard remove bolts.
I already have all necessary tools, but no way to work, due the down rod an oil pan
And much hard to refit without working space.
I'm thinking remove engine and gearbox together, from front and do the work for chain, tensioner and valve cover, and transmission on one time.
anyway I will update you
