New Zealand 2010 Range Rover Autobiography 5.0 SC V8 Galway Green

Pete, for what it is worth (i'm not a gearbox specialist like Phil) I'm getting the feeling that this box is not worth the work and you'd be better of getting a recon box from a reputable place. Phil is of course better placed to advise you on this.

I just notice a lot of "damage" and it sounds like you are replacing almost everything.

Unless it is of course cheaper to replace everything, in that case I would continue (but that is being Dutch Smile ). MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

It's certainly very disappointing what you've found up to now. The whole transmission sounds, to put it kindly, very tired - and the cowboys that previously rebuilt it haven't helped.

I just don't think it's worth chucking a load of money at this particular unit (with new clutch plates, gasket/seal kit, wiring loom, speed sensor, etc. it's going to amount to £100s) and you might be better sourcing a 'previously enjoyed' unit that hasn't previously been rebuilt and lavishing your attention on that - though clearly this is a bit of a lottery too.

I have enough (used but good) parts to make you a transmission from scratch but I'm currently rebuilding a transmission for someone off another forum so it would be a few weeks before I could make a start, so that's not much use to you I'm afraid.

Sorry to be so pessimistic.

Phil

Cheers Phil, I'll have a look round....

I do know of one that is off a LHD car, am I right in thinking it is just the selector that is on the other side and I would have to change the selector rod from my old one, or are there other differences...

Cheers Pete

Germany 2012 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Santorini Black

Hi
the gearboxes are not handed, so should work regardless where from. (LHD/RHD)

if oyu need an idea of how to do automatic gearbox refurbs, then have a look at this al time classic here:

Range Rover 5L40E for TD6 refurbish.

Rolling with laughter

At least he knows what he is talking about and the workbench is clean.

if I can be of help sourcing a replacement gearbox over here in germany
let me know. if you need an adress to ship to, I could offer this.

Have you asked the ZF people directly? With the pound to euro exchange rates
being in favour for pounds, a direkt box from ZF could be reasonable

Yes, as heppsen has already stated, there’s no difference between LHD & RHD models as far as the transmission is concerned. On the ‘032’ Range Rover model both the selector lever and the inhibitor switch are on the RH side of the transmission. On the BMW X5 (‘029’ & ‘034’ models for the 4.4i and 4.6iS respectively) the inhibitor switch is on the RH side but the selector lever is on the LH side. Other BMW models with the 5HP24 have both the lever and the switch on the LH side.

Although I’m sure this is already well understood, just for the avoidance of any doubt the main casing on the Range Rover ZF 5HP24 (i.e. the 1058 000 032 model) is unique to the L322 as it mates with the NV225 transfer box (also unique to the L322) using a long output shaft. Other models of the 5HP24 will therefore not fit in the Range Rover - not even the BMW X5 models as they connect to a different transfer case.

Cheers Phil and heppsen, thought I'd read somewhere they were different....

Anyway it looks like I'm sorted, just got back from Retford with a box, there are quite a few on ebay with silly mileages for loads of money, even one with 177,000 miles and they wanted nearly a grand for it...

This one was advertised as having done not many miles since a full recon so seemed worth a look, I took the sump off and the oil is pretty clean, the magnets had next to no swarf on them and the rest of it looked good, you can see the green gaskets where it's been apart, he was asking £750 for it and after some teeth sucking and waving a wad of cash I got it for £500 including the torque convertor, a virtually brand new oil cooler and the pipes (mine needed changing anyway) he said he had driven the FF and it drove fine, they bought it as a third party write off... also came with a 30 day warranty.....

I'm certainly not counting my chickens yet but it "seemed" like a good deal and will be if it works OK.

Oil, what came out at the top and new oil at the bottom.... not too bad at all...

Looks very clean and unmolested inside...

All the plugs in the case have been changed, a bit different from the rusty ones on my old box...

And a virtually new, genuine, oil cooler, has old pipes but they look OK, one of mine was badly damaged...

Should get it in next week... wish me luck...!!!

Cheers, the filter is dated June 2014 so not been in long....

RRPhil,

Just done a pin out check and all are within tolerance apart from EPRS1 which comes in at 6.8ohms, spec says 5.4 to 6.4....

Is that a problem??

Cheers Pete

Hmm, that is a bit higher than usual. EPRS1 is the ‘green cap’ main pressure solenoid and its winding resistance is usually around 0.5 ohm lower than the four other ‘black cap’ EPRS solenoids.

It’s probably okay and, as the solenoids can be replaced with the transmission in-situ, I would press on with the re-install anyway and you can evaluate again once the vehicle’s up and running.

Pete,

The EPRS1 solenoid from your old valve block measures 5.8 ohm

so at least you have a replacement that you can try in the unlikely event that it turns out to be necessary.

Cheers Phil, they all measured at the top of their range, it could be a low battery in my meter.....

I sent you an email about the old box.... Pete
