Air Conditioning not cold

I switch my air con on, the revs dip a little as expected when idling but nothing really cold comes out, when I compare to my Mazda, which is ice cold (2005) in a minute or two. Is it simply a case of having to re-gas them?

Sounds like it is due a re-gas or at least a health check Very Happy Land Rover Addict

I agree, it could be the liquid phase is almost gone, so enough pressure to keep the system working but not enough liquid to cool. Had it on my 4.2 SC as well, just a bit of R134a in it and cool air in 10 minutes Wink MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

So can this be done yourself with ease? If so, which product or would Halfords do something like this?

Sounds as though you have a leak on the system somewhere. Current regulations require that a loss of refrigerant is traced then rectified and the system vacuum tested before being refilled with new refrigerant . Beware that some of these so called experts will just top up for a few bob and send you on your way, this is false economy as modern gases are in fact blended from different gases and have varying molecular size and therefore the smallest molecular gas will leak first rendering the remaining gases useless. Just topping up will result in a return to the garage in short time and is also illegal. Agueroooooooooo. 93-20

ok thanks.

Halfords have quoted for £49 at a garage they own, attached to their store that they check for leaks and pressurize for 45 mins and if there are none, they re-gas.

I am wondering now whether to just do it myself;

Well I thought I did ... was planning on checking the pressure myself and topping up. If this was illegal, I suspect Halfords wouldn't be allowed to sell these bits to diagnose.

I strongly recommend you don't try and refill the ac system by yourself using one of the above kits.
If your system is low on gas, which seems likely, you need to have the system checked and refilled professionally. You have absolutely no way at this stage whether the system has a leak which may or may not be the case and which may or may not need to be fixed before proceeding further. Equally you have absolutely no way of knowing , in terms of refrigerant and oil, what is in the system at present.
The only guaranteed way to satisfactorily re-gas an ac system is to remove what is left, check it's vacuum holding capabilities and then if all is well proceed to refill with the measured amounts of refrigerant and oil and probably a leak inhibitor.
I'd go for the £49 offer from Halfords, with the equipment they have they are surprisingly good at this particular job.
It's a good price, even Kwik Fit provide the same service.

It is not just like blowing a tyre up, a certain volume of gas as a liquid has to be put in the system. The way to do it properly is to have an empty system and fill from a known weight of liquid. Also to top up as I said before results in an unequal and useless blend of gas. If it is leaking now it will leak again when you top it up your way and just make things worse. Agueroooooooooo. 93-20

I use professional air con people - i.e. that's their sole business and that's where our local LR dealership take your vehicle! They aren't hard to locate and they are VERY thorough. Halfords....sorry but I'd look harder. Land Rover Addict

I agree with Dmrr, have a ring round and get it done professionally,my mate used the 'Diy kit' on his car and it didn't work so he ended up paying someone who knew what he was doing and it worked a treat. He even told him that most people who think their air con was working good will be surprised just how much cooler it will be with a professional service.!!

I wonder how Halfords and the kit manufacturers get around this.........

Achievement of this qualification allows experienced MAC Technicians (working with cars and car-derived vans) to continue to practice after 4th July 2011.
All MAC Technicians must have achieved (as a minimum requirement) a refrigerant handling qualification (approved by DEFRA), meeting the EU F-gas regulations.
On and after this date, in order to legally recover F-gas (fluorinated greenhouse gas) from air conditioning systems in motor cars and car derived vans.

Excerpt from course requirements.
