Is it bad for the gearbox to pull of in 2nd

Basically just what the title says. I just realiased today that I can put the car into 2nd and pull off. Just wondering if I should avoid doing this incase it puts extra stress on the box.

On later MY's, you can pull away in 3rd Thumbs Up

It's best not to pull of in anything other than 1st, as it works the torque converter harder than it normally would Thumbs Up

Mikey - I thought I'd read somewhere that under normal "setting off" conditions the car automatically selects 2nd gear and only uses 1st for those that require it.

Is this complete baloney or perhaps the results of too much beer? Very Happy

I'd say, keep it I DRIVE and let the transmission sort itself out.

That say, in very icy/slippery conditions, pulling away in a higher gear can help maintain traction. If the FFRR has TR, then just let it be, but it's something to try in the other ones.

Mine normally sets off in second in moe most conditions when in D but will select first of the van is on the back. Or I floor it. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Put your car in "D" and drive away from a standing start. Then put it into manual mode and drive away in both first & second and make your own mind up... Im sure my 4.4 TDV8 pulls away (in normal driving conditions) in 2nd & a flying start Whistle in 1st Thumbs Up

V10 M5 my dad had a few years back would always pull away in 2nd in D (smg box) thing was so powerfull its was near impossible to move it in first without the wheels spinning. Horrible transmission though only felt right when you hammered it, which was fun....... My xkr jaguar defaults to second from a standing start? Why do they bother putting first there if it doesn't need it??

^ You may need that first when towing, starting on a steep hill or when you floor it.
