Help!! Having travelled 1000 km to Italy. Yesterday after arrival and having unpacked the car I came to discover that I had no reverse when driving slightly uphill Only very slippery rearward movement when revving up. In Low gear there seemed to be more movement and less slip. Today in the morning I drove the car for 20 min. and after that reverse seemed quite normal (on flat ground). When leaving this afternoon (right after starting up) there was practical no reverse (high and low gear the same) . Managed to get out and after 20 min drive there was low gear reverse movement quite normal again (didn't even try high gear).

I need the car every day to get to the ski slopes (at least 10 min drive with some hills). How much harm will this do? And will I be able to drive the car back home next week?

Any help really, really much needed Wify is loosing her faith in the car

Oh and what might be of interest to those who know about this problem: since some 2 months when selecting reverse the is some 2-5 seconds delay before you feel the car taking off.

Could be that the linkage needs greasing, causes the same symptoms on the zf box. Not sure about gm box though.

A good squirt of wd and coat of grease sorts this out most of the time on zf There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Pete was bang on the money... Sounds low on fluid to me... Probably has a leak and driving it low on oil will probably kill the box sir

So, find a local garage that can check the level and also check for a leak! (don't be surprised if a leak is not obvious) BUT make sure they use the correct fluid sir

@ Cam-tech-graig; is there an explanation for low fluid only affecting the reverse? D seems like normal.

Is there anyone out there who has had the "linkage problem" with the GM box as suggested by Northernmonkeyjones?

NO! But its the best, easiest and simplest place to start my friend... IMHO the linkage would need checking too, because if the gearbox is selecting reverse but the selector does not know its in reverse then that also could be the issue...

ie... My D2 with an XYZ switch (on the side of the gearbox) if you select D and D does not light up on the gear selector panel BUT the gear lever is in D (but a mm to far or visa versa) will drive away in a default 3rd gear!

Im not sure exactly how the electronics work on a TD6 but it could be similar? Either way, have both the fluid level checked and check when putting the car in D or R it shown it on the displays too

@Cam-tech-craig; just checked the fluid at 42 degr. C (always have my IIDTool with me ) and nothing dripped out. So definitely too low! Nowhere any sign of a leak! Linkage seemed OK.
What a shame on me I did the flush this summer myself. Guess I didn't change enough trough the gears when topping off.
Now going to order the fluid and find a big syringe out here so I can top off properly at the end of the week.

Had a similar problem a couple of years back with reverse only and it was a crack in the valve block. Fluid pressure was lost in reverse, all forward gears were ok. Engine was revving then reverse went in with a jolt. There was no sign of any fluid leakage either.

@paulTyrer: Thnks for your reassuring post (at least I'm not the only one ) You had this problem also with a FF Td6? Mine doesn't seem to be very impressed by revving up just makes the slip worse and definitely no jolt at all. What I experience is that when cold there's hardly any rearward movement at all and when fluid being warmed up (can check this with IIDTool) there's at least any in low gear

No, mine is a 4.4 V8 petrol.

Hey you guys, guess what... went to the pharmacist to buy a syringe for injecting the fluid into the filler hole. Was a very helpful guy thinking of what else may work out. He suggested to use a rectal iirigator and yes he is right: nice long tube, tap at the injector side and a wide funnel at the other side. Think this must work out fine . Fluid is expected to arrive at Friday. Keep you informed about proceedings.
