Noisy Rear Suspension - sounds like an old spring mattress

Hi,

MY2012 4.4TDV8 has had a suspension noise vertually since I bought it in the summer. It's sounds like an old spring mattress when I'm going over road undulations or the small 2" threshold on to my driveway and even gives a slight creak when I get out.

It's been in to the local LR dealer 5 times over the last few months for this and a ticking engine sound and squeezing brake problems. I'm really it havering a good experiance with it

The lead tech said he thought it was something to do with a rear 'anti roll bar' but they have not cured it yet.

Any thoughts ?

Thx

A read of these 3 links should get you started bwelton with considerations that include dry joints:

http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic28421.html?highlight=pram

Also, when you get out of the car, I've found that the RR and other automatic 4x4 creaked more if the car was simply driven to a halt put from D into P and the handbrake then applied, as opposed to coming to a halt, holding the foot brake, changing from D to N, applying the park brake, taking foot of foot brake so the park brake is holding the car and then selecting P before switching the engine off and getting out. You maybe do this anyway but I didn't until forum members enlightened me.

Thumbs Up

Does it squeak in all weathers?

Usually we find "a balljoint" has gone dry... They can make the most horrendous noise when they are worn and dry! Often stops in the rain though, hence my question Thumbs Up

Ive looked through the links but think its different to the 'Pram' condition and I'm not sure about the problems in the 1st two links.

It's seems to be noises in all weathers. I have not noticed it happening in different driving conditions. I think that the noise is more pronounced if the car is in elevated off road height, but is also there in normal vehicle height conditions.

Any other ideas or anybody having a similar experiance of these creaking sounds ?

Can you get it to do it by rocking the car?? mine had a squeak just like yours which was a rear lower hub joint, you could get it to do it and find it easily on a ramp... Pete

Sounds like a suspension bush. Mine used to creak like a good 'un on the right rear side when I drove over even small bumps in the road. It also used to creak when I got out. Had it sorted by my local independent for about £80 No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

3 hours into a 4 hour drive today and ours started creaking at the front end again. Also when rocking the steering wheel from left to right it sounded like an old suspension style pram or mattress, whatever you want to call it.

It did this a couple of months ago and on both occasions definitely started after the outside temperature was dropping towards zero degrees.

Put the car in our heated garage for an hour and for now at least, the noise has gone! Shocked

Pld118, that sounds like the rack end, it's a nylon ball joint with some grease in the joint, when it wears a lot of the grease goes and whats left then hardens when cold...

Not to expensive and an easy DIY job if you're into that sort of stuff......!! Pete

Thanks very much for the reply Pete. I commented at the time there might be a nylon/ steering aspect to it. In fact, I'm sure our Discovery3 had this job done a few years ago due to us reporting a nylon rubbing sound when steering lock was applied.

What's needed and how's if done?

Apols to OP if this seems like a thread hijack Embarassed Thumbs Up

Remove track rod end, counting the number of turns, remove rubber bellows from rack, undo large nut that holds the rack end on, It's pretty big so you will need a large adjustable or similar, remove rack end, put new one on, refit bellows with cable ties and screw track rod end back on the same number of turns...

Can't remember exactly but new one was about £30... new bellows, if needed, about £15... Pete
