If it is numbers then for example there is this ( although I have blown a few head gaskets on v8's and never had one that runs well ???) http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/adv...?logcode=p

but to be honest it all comes down to do you want to do it or not I have a p38 which I do things on with pleasure my other one in my opinion is a dog and not worth it to a friend of mine they are the same its all personal so do what you want not what you should Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

5k with head gasket gone, is he Censored ?!

I too have had cars with head gasket troubles, and usually within a week it goes from using a bit of water to an undriveable misfiring bag of Censored that puts out that much steam it would put a steam train to shame. Only this l322 is the opposite if it wasn't for the coolant loss i wouldnt be so concerned as it drives perfectly, pulls like a train etc.

Does anyone know anywhere that sells re con engines? I dont really want to take the gamble on a second hand engine. I spoke to local lr dealer and was quoted 11.5k plus vat but it was showing as no longer available. Obviously thats a total non starter, i would happily sink maximum 3grand more into it, i cant have the only l322 thats needed an engine, what do other people do? I have spoken to local engine specialist and he has never done one and werent too sure where to get one and referred me to a bmw specialist. I havent contacted him yet cos few days ago i was prepared to send it for scrap, the more i am driving it the more im coming round to the idea of keeping it. Might give him a call tomorrow see what he says.

I know of a guy locally who has the timing tools which im hoping i could borrow, and as said previously ive priced up the bits to be about 2k my biggest issues is i get in there and find head or block is cracked, them im in too far to go back and will be left with no option but to get a 2nd hand engine or a recon engine (where from and how much i dunno?)

And as said, dont want a 2nd hand engine its not like they're only 100quid and its worth the risk, other day i looked and one from an l322
complete on the pallet ready to go with only 185k (!!!!!!!) On the clock for only 2grand. Id rather spend 2grand on euromillions tickets.

As for the gearbox, yes its had the cooler pipes aswell and had a recon box in 2008 at 100k miles i think so im hoping its not another box issue, or was the box replaced because of the error message and the box didnt fix it which is why afterwards its had a cooler, pipes and box oil?

My options as i see it;
1)source a recon engine deal with the box issues another day
2)strip engine with a view to replace vanos chain and head gaskets, not really viable due to oil consumption issues.
3)sell it as rolling project, i will make money doing this which will go towards either a 4.2sc or diesel model
4) carry out coolant pressure test, drain refill with coolant check and double check every area im sure this coolant is going somewhere other than h/gasket.

Also when i got it motd i had the guy put the petrol emissions tester over the headtank with the cap off, the machine didnt pick up a thing....

Might be worth putting one of these over the expansion tank to see if there is any exhaust in the coolant

Also I had a p38 which used a load of coolant thought head gasket but it too ran smooth for too long eventually found a leak on the rad where the top tank was crimped it only leaked under pressure so of course evaporated and left no trace I foundd it using dye did the sniff test to confirm it had no slipped liner plus stick a comp test on it - can't remember if you said you had .
I rebuilt the engine in the garage took a little time but is still running 11k later only old p38

Do not, whatever you do use 1st Choice Engines, only ever heard bad about them, if you google them they have terrible reviews as well...

If you are not worried about time, then have yours rebuilt, ask around, you will find some old style engineering shop that will do the job for you and it will only cost what needs doing.... Most engine reconditioning places work to a cost, only change what is totally worn out and won't last the 12mths warranty....

You know what they say, if you want it doing properly do it yourself.... Pete

So that's at least 2 companies to stay away from then...... Shocked

You will obviously have to do a bit of due diligence whilst selecting a reconditioner if that's the way you go.

If you want a real project, you could drop in an S62 lump from a E39 M5 or a 4.6 from an X5 Whistle 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Could be worth just getting the coolant system pressure tested. Find someone with one of these

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Astro-Pneumatic-...852wt_1037

get the system pumped up and wait to see if it looses pressure, if it does you should be able to see the coolant leaking out 56 TDV8 Vogue SE

If you can't see it leaking out then it's getting into the oil or the pistons.... Pete

Todays developments in the ongoing saga...

Topped up coolant lunchtime by about 250mls put it on pressure test after work, i have same kit as on above ebay link, pumped up to 17psi and went over everything with a torch. In about an hour i lost 3psi but maybe the cap doesnt seal 100%? But no signs of leakage at all from anywhere. The only things left are heater matrix, but carpets are dry, internal engine fault or hows this for a wildcard, the lpg vaporiser thing?

Once i took the pressure test kit off water level was down by about 500mls. Soooo whilst on pressure test ive lost half a litre of water !!!!

Incidently its not running well on lpg and its set fault codes for misfire cylinder 5 and 6. But runs fine on petrol.

Every day another nightmare, gutted first choice engines arent recommended as for 2.5k i was gonna buy that until i seen the next post after it!!!

Do the lpg vaporisers go wrong? Could it be putting water into the lpg system? Why misfire 5 and 6?

Oh and while i had the fault code reader on it have cam sensor bank 2 code, had this before so swapped sensers from bank 1 to 2. Which makes me wonder if the pickup hasnt been set up correctly by the guy who replaced the tappets.

Gearbox has a code for temp senser circuit a. Which puts my mind at rest about the gearbox error as suspect wiring or sensor...

Is the heater nice and hot, could be an airlock in the system, did you pressure test it hot or cold?? Pete

Ok my experience of this is with a p38 v8 with lpg the vaporiser is usually two chambers with a neoprene gasket between them to at least there is an area where the gasket prevents water from entering the chamber with the gas. I took mine off and stripped it down - there are a couple of people on fleabay who sell kits to refurb the vaporisers. It was only after I had done all this that I found out that they need doing approx every 7/8 years max so it is worth disconnecting the coolant from the vaporiser and by passing it then retest.
