Depends where in the cooling system they spliced to get the vaporiser supplied. You can prove this by returning the cooling pipe work back to original once you do this if the coolant loss persists it is engine if it is then fine the problem lies with the log system. That would be my first port of call |

The vapouriser is generally meant to be inserted into the cooling circuit at the supply or return pipe from the heater matrix to ensure its getting water supply all the time. This is what allows you to start on LpG with some systems as its getting water flowing over it straight away

Sounds like a stuck thermostat to me, warm heater to start with as it's closed, then sticking and not opening until it gets too hot, then dumping the cold water in the system into the mix so reducing the heater temp then when it's mixed in the heater comes back....

Pete, thing is i'm confused why it doesnt do it all the time. I did 120 mile trip yesterday and the last five miles temp gauge went into the red. I pulled off into a layby and opened the bonnet as was previously feeling quite positive at 115 miles with no fault so expected to see top hose hanging off or something clearly causing the temp gauge in the red but no, nothing. Except a faint bubbling noise from the header tank and signs of water around the top. Checked oil and water levels today. It took 2.5 pints of water and 1.5litres of oil. Dont think im going to bother with the castrol magnetec for much longer as the rate its using it i think i might just buy a cheap barral of 15/40 that i use in the john deere!!!!

I'd say about £5k to be honest, maybe £6k if you hold out for a long time. FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Thanks for the thought but as far as i can make out the engine in the l322 is the m62tub44 fitted and was only fitted after about 2001 i have considered buying a doner 740 but dont know if i can be bothered. As you have to swap the sump, oil pump, chain covers, starter motor etc. If it was simple swap like for like then it would be straight forward. Its gonna be a day removing one engine, a day removing the other, maybe another day making one good engine out of 2 then a day re fitting it and another day check for leaks/trapped wires etc and scrapping the 740. Ok say a weeks work by myself and its gonna be a struggle on my own. Sadly i have bigger better (more profitable) projects i could spend a week of my time on which makes the 740 swap too much hassle.

Its an omvl system which has the gas pipe from the vapouriser split in two both go to two seperate units. Then from each unit it has four pipes, each going to each mannifold runner and is connected to something tapped into the intake. I assume this is the injector (my knowledge of lpg is limited) i suppose i could swap injectors and even the distribution unit from one bank to the other to prove which bits are defective.

Still think it is worth taking the lpg out the equation by by passing in the cooling system completely remove the two t pieces then run on petrol and see what you get. I had a similar situation with a p38 and the vaporiser needed refurbing and I had a crack in a liner. If you do this it will show if it is lpg related or not |
