@contraband, I have yet to meet a YES voter, so am not sure who they are canvassing, however I can guarantee if i drove to the poor parts tonight then I would get a YES, (no offence) Thumbs Up

As Vogue said this is the problem - the less well off and less educated (sweeping generalisation, but if you have the skills and motivation, you can get a job and will take any job) will vote Yes because they feel hard done to and are being promised things will all be much better as an independent nation.

Frankly, it's unlikly these people have the information and mental ability to weigh up all the factors (currency, debt etc) to arrive at an informed decision (somehow I doubt the Scottish equivalent of The Star is providing unbiased, in-depth coverage of the issues....probably just printing lots of photos from Braveheart...), they are just being manipulated by the media into thinking voting No is somehow anti-Scottish...

Graeme
That is a bit more than a "sweeping generalisation". I am a Scot but without a vote as I live in France. I know people on both sides and to tar the Yes voters with a description such as in your post is, I am sorry to say, ridiculous. John

Perhaps, but it is somewhat dismissive and I also have had conversations with both sides with people who don't fall into the description. John

Whilst you may not agree with the way Contraband put it I have to support him and say he is correct.

If you come to Scotland you can pretty much guess where the YES & NO voters live by the area in which they live. My nearest wee village is 99.999% a NO whitewash. My nearest town, by comparison, is entered via the council estates and a NO voter wouldn't survive 5 minutes if he dared to put up a NO sign.

Here in the middle of nowhere I can talk freely about the vote with any neighbours I happen to meet whilst out and about without fear and the odd YES person has that same freedom too. Just try being a NO voter in Glasgow's housing estates!!!

Have to say I am with Weegie on this one branding half the nation as dimwitted neds just because they wish to vote YES is not only wrong but is hugely disrespectful. There are many highly educated highly articulate Scots that support independence and can give good supporting reasons why they do. Personally I am still undecided perhaps swaying towards the NO side but I absolutely do respect the opinions of those that have a different opinion to me, class and background just doesn't come into it. I'm for yes, it has nothing to do with old past bickering, I believe Scotland has the ability and finances to be independent. The union was fine but in modern times it hasn't worked fairly on either side.

Why should Scotland get to vote on rUK issues, why should it have a gov't it doesn't vote for, just look at what no are doing now, more powers to Scotland if they stay, firstly if we are not as wealthy as we say why argue to keep us and will rUK be happy with Scotland getting more powers, according to recent polls it appears to be a no there. The union is out-dated in my mind.

Plus a no now would give Westminster the ability to say you voted to stay here's what we are doing, tough, live with it. We have already had years of being test ground for unpopular policy and Scotland simply does not have the numbers to get the government it votes for in the uk, only the majority population has that.

I have English family and friends and we are not going to fall out nor stop speaking, the whole anti England / Scots nonsense is just another scare to try stop it happening by some elements.

edit I should add the council estate comment is offensive, not very nice and quite wrong. I live in a rather nice place, in fact it has no council estates, I come from a good background, am very well educated and I like many in the same circumstances am voting yes. Plus just because someone lives in a council house does not make them a lesser person, that is terrible class elitism in my opinion. 09 TDV8 Westminster, Mariana Black, Rear seat entertainment, hatch bag and 2 slobbery mutts

I still agree with GraemeC's original comment.. people are being promised things will be better under independence and there is nothing to back up any of the claims. Just listen to the yes crowds on the telly shouting down the NO talkers.
There is without a doubt an ill informed aggressive nature showing its ugly head in the yes camp. How many defaced yes posters have you seen? I've seen none... but so many defaced NO posters.
The yes camp still have an annoying response to a lot of serious questions which is to say that it will all be sorted out after the referendum.
By all means keep the Scottish pound, why not, it is ours... but who the hell else will accept it? What will it be worth at the bureau de change when I travel down to England.... Previously..
