Hi,

The last few times I have been in the car (TDV8) 2008, 80k. The gear change seems to been a lot harsher than it was, to be honest sometimes it 'thuds' home between first and second. It also seems to be lazier in change cogs too?

Would like to see what you folks think before taking it to the garage.

I had something similar a few months ago but mine was when I kicked down it would think about it then thud into gear took it to the main stealer and they said it was a software upgrade which they did and it is better but not quite how it should be so taking it back in a couple of weeks as still under extended warranty

Think it may well be time for a service.

There are various software changes the Dealer can make to the gearbox ECU, as the car comes out of the factory with a default programme to suit most countries and terrains.

In mine, I was getting the thump on Lift off throttle rollout 3-2-1 (there's a LR technical bulletin to address this) and apparently it can happen because the software default is designed for sand driving (maybe that's a SC issue as most go to the Gulf states).

After a gearbox flash with different programme its much improved.

however, at your mileage I would highly recommend a proper gearbox fluid flush, I had my TDV8 done at 82K and the difference was very noticeable, so much smoother afterwards, and peace of mind for the next owner (Fanders in my case )

I shall be having mine serviced before it reaches 60K just to keep it running super smooth until I eventually move it on at 100K Discovery 4 HSE

+1 for the gearbox service.

I got my local LR dealership to do it, its not hard and they have the instructions.

I sourced the parts, fluid and filter, from dan - dont skimp on the fluid, it has to be the correct zf/lr fluid.

Lr then charged me £95 plus to do it. Cant remember parts price but £260 rings a bell. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

We'll had an automatic gearbox specialist look at it yesterday, no codes but went for a test drive and came back with the conclusion the at the torque converter is on its way out? So do I now get the box opened up £1800+ vat or change the oil and se where that leads to? Any advice would be appreciated.

If it were me I'd have the oil service done first.

Did you see the episode of Wheeler Dealers where they bought a Porsche Boxster S that had a "knackered gearbox"? They did and oil and filter change and it fixed it. Discovery 4 HSE

ok guys,

had my gearbox fluid and filter changed last week at 80k km. Noticed after that the gear shift is slightly more noticeable and a jerk/thud whenever 2 gears are dropped(I think) during highspeed overtaking(160kmh and above) on motorway, which was never there before. When I took the car last week they also said they had reset all the faults messages. Before these no problem gearshift was smooth as silk(though there's a slight thud occasionally from 2-1 during carpark maneuvers), so I was kinda regret doing the gearbox service. The shop just did a fluid change and not flush.

Should I be worried, I read around in the forum saying that the gearbox will need to "adapt" after a reset was done after service. Is this the case. Gonna bring it back by this week to check on the fluid level and any error code readout. It's not bad enough to notice but I am just worried. 2006 4.2 Supercharged Java Black - loving it every moment behind the wheel even at 14 mpg!
