Tdv8 gearbox fault

Hi I've just become a member but have followed the site for a few years for some good advice. The problem I have is after accelerating quite quickly there was a loud whooshing noise followed by a rotational grinding. I stopped immediately but when ever you engage a gear there is no movement and grinding spins up quickly! It also rolls back in park. There was a burning smell as soon as it happened but went away quickly. Iam bracing myself tomorrow for a gearbox but could it be the transfer box? The noise is from that area. The garage can tell you anything... Also iam better buying secondhand or recon. Any good contacts and advice would be welcome.
Thanks[/b]

Could easily be the front diff as they are a little problematic... Rarely hear of transfer box issues... Thumbs Up

Hi I've been told it's possibly the gearbox and transfer box. Won't no till stripped. Taking it to specialist auto transmission garage . They are looking at 4 k plus vat for recon box and new transfer box.is this a good price...... Landrover asking 8.5k!
Thanks

Easy way to check if you are getting drive from the box and transfer box, do the driveshafts still rotate in drive/creep when the car is going nowhere, if so then front or rear diff problem? There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Hi when you engage any gear inc reverse the grinding spins up quick and you can see the prop trying to turn from the transfer box but really don't wont to keep doing it for any length of time. The car won't hold in park either.getting a lot of mixed views from mechanics. Problem is it needs stripped to a degree to find out and whoever strips it has got me were they want.ie if I don't go with them I get the motor back with a box of bits and it's not an easy motor to transport about in this state.arrrg.. Would be great if it was a diff but the noise seems to be from the transfer box area as it's trying to turn the prop. No one local will touch it even a couple of landrover specialists.

Mackie Transmissions in Glasgow are ZF specialists.

http://www.mackie-transmission.com/

A friend of mine has used them to do hot flush oil changes on his 2002 4.4 and his 2007 TDV8 and hasn't got a bad word to say about them.

Hi that's were it's headed. They have a very good reputation but that comes at a price! Just over half of land rover though. Will keep you posted when I get it back. Thanks for help and advice

The big giveaway is that the park lock won’t hold. On the 6HP26X the park lock gear is EB welded to the output shaft :

so, unless the output shaft spline has gone, your fault must lie downstream of the transmission i.e. it’s a transfer box/propshaft/differential/driveshaft problem and not a problem with the transmission itself.

The transfer box is simple to rebuild : http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic12404.html? Alternatively, new ones sell for around £1250 on eBay.

Makes sense basically what I've argued with the first garage. I'am not a mechanic but I no basics of drive train and general mechanics. You have to owning a rangerover!
The situation I'am in is i still have a private warrenty for 2k and until it's stripped I can't get their I dependant guy out. Whoever strips it is going to have to do the job and I'am not not confident with the advice I'am getting. The last thing I need is for someone to strip it, have a box of bits and the evidence of failure gone for the warrenty.
It's going to take the sting out of the tail if they pay out.
But hopefully mackies (we're it's headed) will be honest and change only what's required. Their prognosis was on the phone from the events and symptoms. Not sure how they can be so certain. Just have to wait and see.
Will keep you informed

Hi all. Just to keep you updated. Got the rangerover back today from mackies in Glasgow.
Turned out the shaft from the gearbox to transfer box failed causing damage to both units. Mackies were excellent and very helpful. Would really recommend them as they no there stuff.
Pockets are a bit lighter now mind!

This seems to be the same failure posted by drivesafe (http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic24438.html)?

So are we to believe that this is being caused by the factory failing to coat the spline with the Weicon anti-seize paste before the transmission and transfer box are mated together?

Or possibly the O-ring in the end of the transfer box input shaft is failing to retain the paste/grease? I assume that it’s this grease that is included in the syringe (shown in the top RH corner below) when you buy the input shaft O-ring from Land Rover (IYX 500050).

It would be very interesting to know if other forum members have suffered this same failure – maybe it’s going to become a common issue.

You have a good point here. One word of warning though. There are no tell tail signs the car drove perfect until an almighty bang. Stock up on gearboxes etc and you be sure to sell them soon! My mileage is only 68k. Expected a bit better from such an expensive car new. Land rover are aware of the issue but won't broadcast it.

Or did they not bother uprating this part when they stuck the V8 diesel engine in... is it because it can't take the torque?? Pete
