Politics, taste and religion, nothing to discuss, not even on a wonderful site like this one will find agreement. Each his own.

I know quite a few people who bought a brand new L322 when the L405 came out and could have afforded either. It's all down to personal taste. A few things I don't like about the new one are the gills which don't serve any purpose, the lowish roofline, the Evoquesque lights, the interior with no buttons so you have to operate everything through the nav screen (like the heated seats, you need to go through the screen menus instead of just a simple button), I don't like the added chrome taken from the Sport (side and boot). So surely it drives great but the looks don't incite me to drive one. And best of all I don't have to buy a new car and suffer huge depreciation even though I can afford a new one like many late model L322 owners. L322: a keeper, L405: a fashion item if you want the latest model which soon will go out of fashion. |

Same as every other new car at every price level, the vast majority are on the never-never. UK car sales would die stone-dead without easy credit. No question the L405 is a better thing to drive, but the exterior styling is both flashier and less distinguished - Land Rover clearly know their markets. My other dislikes are that it feels more car-like from the driver's seat (window line, high centre console, dash shape), and things like the less practical boot space (sloping roofline/sloping tailgate) are irritating in a large car. The styling thing is interesting as it's obvious that conspicuous and flashy vulgarity is what most people want, even in the UK - it's not just driven by the new-money markets. You could argue that it's fashion, but I suspect it's more to do with the market being much bigger due to widespread availability of credit. Gerry McGovern was quoted in Autocar saying, "You have to be realistic and know that if you want to grow, we need to be less polarising. The Discovery won design awards, but it was polarising. It wasn’t until 2010 when we made it less brutish and utilitarian and more premium and comfortable that this changed". So the head of Land Rover design thinks that the original (and really very, very good) Discovery 3 design was polarising, and chucking glitter and tinsel at it made it more popular - not the better drivetrain. Given that a Discovery 4 looks like a Discovery 3 which has been locked in the PowerfulUK warehouse for too long, that doesn't bode well for future designs. His opinion is obviously vindicated by the sales figures, so I suppose everybody who preferred the traditional Land Rover approach better get used to it. |

Yes I forgot about that: lower roof line, sloping back window means smaller boot and I want my dog to travel comfortably! Clarkson pointed out the fact (although it's the top gear cameraman who doesn't fit comfortably).

smaller boot , hmm look at the real specs , and how odd it was that tossers showed 1 guy in the 1 shot and the next guy was 6"6 in the next shot !1, idiots mind you it's a comedy show not a car show and not even any good at being funny either. Far to many gone... |

I fail to see how a MY10+ L322 is any less flashy than the L405. Both have cheese grater grilles, spangly lights and lots of Noble plated this and that. |
