Due to the huge current cost of the L405:
I'll never find out and you could apply this thought to any 'big ticket item' but I'd be curious to know what percentage of the UK L405 market comprises:

A. Privately bought outright
B. Company cars
C. Privately leased
D. HP agreement; &
E. What percentage have to be taken back or returned early.

Politics, taste and religion, nothing to discuss, not even on a wonderful site like this one will find agreement. Each his own.
the 405 was a design disaster imo and has not grown on me yet. If I can afford it or not, it's just not my kind of car. I never liked the styling of the Sssang joengs, hyjoendaas etc. this new RR just looks to far east to me. Lost it's character. Although the 322 looks old next to a 405 I do prefer the first.

I know quite a few people who bought a brand new L322 when the L405 came out and could have afforded either. It's all down to personal taste. A few things I don't like about the new one are the gills which don't serve any purpose, the lowish roofline, the Evoquesque lights, the interior with no buttons so you have to operate everything through the nav screen (like the heated seats, you need to go through the screen menus instead of just a simple button), I don't like the added chrome taken from the Sport (side and boot). So surely it drives great but the looks don't incite me to drive one. And best of all I don't have to buy a new car and suffer huge depreciation even though I can afford a new one like many late model L322 owners. L322: a keeper, L405: a fashion item if you want the latest model which soon will go out of fashion.

Same as every other new car at every price level, the vast majority are on the never-never. UK car sales would die stone-dead without easy credit.

No question the L405 is a better thing to drive, but the exterior styling is both flashier and less distinguished - Land Rover clearly know their markets. My other dislikes are that it feels more car-like from the driver's seat (window line, high centre console, dash shape), and things like the less practical boot space (sloping roofline/sloping tailgate) are irritating in a large car.

The styling thing is interesting as it's obvious that conspicuous and flashy vulgarity is what most people want, even in the UK - it's not just driven by the new-money markets. You could argue that it's fashion, but I suspect it's more to do with the market being much bigger due to widespread availability of credit.

Gerry McGovern was quoted in Autocar saying, "You have to be realistic and know that if you want to grow, we need to be less polarising. The Discovery won design awards, but it was polarising. It wasn’t until 2010 when we made it less brutish and utilitarian and more premium and comfortable that this changed".

So the head of Land Rover design thinks that the original (and really very, very good) Discovery 3 design was polarising, and chucking glitter and tinsel at it made it more popular - not the better drivetrain. Given that a Discovery 4 looks like a Discovery 3 which has been locked in the PowerfulUK warehouse for too long, that doesn't bode well for future designs. His opinion is obviously vindicated by the sales figures, so I suppose everybody who preferred the traditional Land Rover approach better get used to it.

Yes I forgot about that: lower roof line, sloping back window means smaller boot and I want my dog to travel comfortably! Smile Clarkson pointed out the fact (although it's the top gear cameraman who doesn't fit comfortably).

I fail to see how a MY10+ L322 is any less flashy than the L405. Both have cheese grater grilles, spangly lights and lots of Noble plated this and that.

I'm sure you all know where I stand on this one Laughing
But my thoughts continue to be:

L322: a design classic, which upholds the Range Rover shape in a modern luxury car package. I prefer the interior to that of the L405, as it feels more special and lacks the vast structural pillars of the new car, thus maintaining the pillars of luxury (Space, Light, Comfort and Silence). IMO it also feels far more manageable on the road as the sides are so bluff, hence where the window ends, the body ends, unlike L405.

L405: quiet, fast and refined. A fine luxury car when viewed objectively. However, it's not such a successful interpretation of a modern Range Rover in my eyes. The new cabin disappoints, the minimalist approach leaving me cold, especially in the usual dull colour schemes of black/piano. Equally, the touchscreen sat nav is not up to the job of directing the majority of the car's functions, the task with which it is now entrusted. The L405 is too expensive, and looks crass compared to an L322 as well. It also loses the glasshouse feel for aforementioned reasons. The flared arches and raked front end make it look bulbous. One also senses that the target market for this car has changed. No longer the vestige of the working professional, this has become an ostentatious chariot for China's new wealthy.

But the clincher for me is that you can pick up a smart late L322 4.4 TDV8 for approximately £45k, I.e. half the price of an equivalent SDV8 L405. The jump up just cant be justified on any level, especially when one considers the unproven reliability of a new model, coupled to the knowledge that every six months your new car becomes obsolete with tinkering and updates.

Carry on Thumbs Up
