2006 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Java Black

Just a quick update, just got off the phone to the garage and they've started stripping it down and found the intercooler full of oil so it's sounding like definitely a turbo that's gone. They are going to strip the rest of the heads off now to see if it has caused any damage to the engine.

The problem they've said is when they started it up they couldn't get it started with the oil filler cap on and when they took it off it was blowing smoke out of it so they said it must be pressurising up. Would anything else cause this apart from a hole in a piston?

could it be blowing back through the turbo oil feed pipe, if the turbo has broken down then is it possible it could get pressurised by exhaust gasses, dunno just a thought.

fingers crossed for you that the engine handy ingested the turbo..... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Just joined this forum so apologies in advance for any inadvertant breaches of etiquette !
My 06 tdv8 had a turbo failure [near side ] which wrecked the engine. It's a long story but let us say it was supposed to be covered by a certain well advertised warranty company.
we had the vehicle from new and it was carefully maintained with additional oil filter changes.
Turbo failed at about 76000 miles on kickdown. I thought I had driven over a landmine.
Coventry Classic Engines fitted a new half engine.
Land Rover were no help because of the mileeage.
If there is a lesson to be learned stick with Land Rover's own extended warranty. After 100,000 miles you are on your own. unless the mieleage is reached during the warranty period as I understand it but you will not be able to renew.

£13,000.....
Engine would run with loud big end knocking [ RAC recovery started it..]
lot of oil underneath and in exhaust but still oil in sump
Near side turbo broke up. Off side turbo OK

All a bit shocking and feel for all who've had this terrible experience. Feeling slightly green around the gills as just put a deposit on a TDV8 with 88k on the clock. Wondering if I should get the deposit back? Confused

Remember that forums tend to attract people who have a problem as they need help and advice.

I'm sure there are plenty of cars out there that will never have the problem.

The gap that's missing for me........

1) is there any way of telling its about to happen (eg before you buy)

And.....

2) if your car is ok, what preventive maintenance can you undertake other than regular servicing with the right oil?

Mine had oil and filter changes every 6000 miles and the engine almost never cooled down used on longish runs. A frined has a similar TDV8 Vogue bought new a little after mine and has done 125000 trouble free miles. I have friends with lower mileage examples who have not had this sort of trouble.
I now have an injector fault shpowing up but they are the original injectors. Running Forte diesel injector cleaner thorough every tank ful and hoping this will sort iit [this is 40,000 miles into the new haldf engine but it may well be related to the original engine failure.
In summary, I don't believe these catastrophic failures are particularly common. The engine rebuilders had a Disco 4 with the a wrecked engine after turbo failure at the same time as mine [ but that's the TDv6 ]

Was this covered under warranty or did you actually pay this? This is around 60% of the cars value that I am purchasing and don't see how this could be justified in my situation.

Bit bothered as wife will have a few short journeys to do every week. Straight in for an oil and filter change when I get it.

Re the cooling down of engine, I tend not to do it with the Disco but as I live in a rural area the last mile tends to be slow and my theory is the turbo is very low boost so kind of cooling down for the last minutes driving.

Van Diesel, just worth noting that whilst I have every sympathy with the OP, this is the first major engine failure I've read about on here in 18 months

I don't think there is any inherent design flaw, it's just one of those things which can happen

My TDV8 is on 90k miles and I've every confidence that, with proper preventive maintenance, it will be good for another 90k miles 2007 Zermatt Silver TDV8 Vogue SE - now sold but was a great car!

@GraemeC - Thanks for your words of comfort. Need to convince myself this doesn't happen to all of them. Was really excited about the purchase but have been searching too many nightmare posts here and over on RRS.

I guess I may get the hoses to and from the turbo checked for gunk and blockages when I get it to see if a) there is any possibility of an issue and b) if so whether disaster can be averted.

Anyone technical know how easy it is to inspect the turbo for tell tale signs?

Van Diesel, It would appear that the installation of the tdv8 is more problematic in the sport than the ffrr, Smaller engine bay ostensibly stolen off the disco which was really desinged to take the 6 cyl version of the engine. Less space round it etc.

It is true though, the op is only the second catastrophic failure i have heard of in nearly 2 years of ownership, bearing in mind there are quite a few owners of tdv8s on here . With proper maintenance they should last well, and there does not seem to be too many problems woth the 6 speed zf box which cant be avoided with more frequent oil changes. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Turbos are routinely used in the automotive industry and have been for years. As far as I am aware car manufacturers do not make their own, they are made by "turbo manufacturers" so attaching news of a report of a turbo failure to either a car manufacturer or specific car is invalid unless backed up by a statistically high failure rate which would probably be due to a poorly designed installation (uncommon these days and not applicable in this case). So I wouldn't worry yourself over this, just get it bought and start enjoying Full Fat living. 4.4 TDV8 Vogue Baltic Blue MY11

I think with the Sport it was a poor installation as they do seem to report a fair number of failures and also Land Rover withdrew the engine from that model.
