Black smoke and ENGINE SYSTEM FAILURE messages

Hi again folks, and I have now got another unknown problem.

About a week back, my wife noticed a large amount of black smoke when I did a normal acceleration from an intersection.

I noticed this continued every time I did a normal from stop or slow speed acceleration.

About 4 days ago, I got an “ENGINE SYSTEM FAILURE” message and lost power.

I coasted to the side of the road, turn the ignition of and then on again and all was well.

I have just completed an oil, oil filter, fuel filter and air filter replacement but I am getting more and more “ENGINE SYSTEM FAILURE” messages and power loses.

Today I did a round trip trip of 20 Kms and it failed once going out ( 10 kms ) and 3 times on the return trip.

I did a search and found plenty on black smoke but not with the power failures so any Ideas and/or suggestions would be appreciated. 2007 TDV8 Lux

Thanks folks, kind of figured that would be the case, but just asked in case it was something as simple as the silencer solution on the air suspension.

I suppose I should be grateful, this pussbox actually operated properly for just on a week. First time in 6 years. 2007 TDV8 Lux

It's worth checking the air hoses from the intercooler for splits - there's also 2 x 2 inch diameter hoses that are hidden under the engine cover, 1 on the rocker cover of each bank of cylinders. They would cause the same symptoms if they are split.

BTW, again would an OBD tool help.

I would have one now but I have had no response from a certain company, even though I have e-mailed them twice to see if there is a local supplier.

There is a Yankee made one, but not sure how it compares. 2007 TDV8 Lux

Could well be the two intercooler pipes - just like the D3 one they split or delaminate and cause this.

Hi all,

Dad's 08 TDV8 has got a bit of a strange issue.

Under light pedal application - pulling out of junctions, etc - it will intermittently flag up "Engine System Fault" on the dash, special programs unavailable etc and go into limp home mode. Key off and restart and it is either OK, or it does it again. Putting it into a TR mode other than Normal seems to stop it doing it.

Now, the odd thing is - it has only done it when above about 1300m altitude, below that is absolutely will not repeat it.

Anyone had similar?

Thanks Martin, this is almost exactly what is happening to mine.

In my case, it is fine on flat running but even the slightest hill and after a few seconds, lose of power and the message.

If i accelerate up the same hill, it does not fail?

Again, I will check all the pipes in the morning.

Thanks again all. 2007 TDV8 Lux
