South Africa 2008 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Stornoway Grey

Trevor

Thanks for the advice. I shall try Savoy. I know they were the original LR dealers before BMW took over and they still work on Land Rovers.

If I ever buy a diesel LR again, I shall get rid of it at 100 000km.

Imagine how much money I would have had for petrol now if I bought a V8 Petrol. I also have a discovery 3 V8 petrol and it never gives me any problems except speeding fines.

I am a true fan. I owned 24 Land rovers and still have my broken RR, Disco3 and Defender. I am the last one to deserve such a disaster.

I shall keep you updated.

Firstly, I'm really sorry to hear of your woes. I do hope it turns out to be something simple.

When I bought my TD6, my LR Indy said good choice, just keep an eye on the gearbox. I would have really liked a TDV8 said I. He shook his head and said that the TDV8 engine ingesting turbo debris is a common thing and hugely expensive to fix so I'm really surprised that there is not more written about it in the forums.

Far from wishing to rub salt into the wounds but it does appear to be something that is far from unheard of.

PM me if you want the Indy's number. He has fixed a few of these now and probably has some tips to share surrounding diagnosis and solutions.

Good luck, hope it's not so bad. 2006 4.2 SC

Germany 2017 Range Rover Vogue SDV8 Carpathian Grey

Hallo all together, here in germany are also a lot of engine(turbo) problems with the TDV8, mostly are solved about the warranty, because here is three years from new, or the used 2007 cars are from a dealer, who has to give warranty also for old cars six month. But each!!! TDV8 has the problem with the generator-dead after 60.000miles (100.000km), very expensive: 1400 Euro! So I stay in my good old TD6, new turbo will cost 600 Euro, new generator incl. fixing 400 Euro, and the engines from BMW are good for 300.000km, one of my clients has 440.000km with first engine and second gearbox! I have a TDV8 also & it has had a few probs but I have changed the Oil & filters in mine twice in the last two months & in my experience turbos usually (but not always) fail due to oil starvation. So my advice to anyone unsure how well it has been serviced changing your oil more often will not harm it but actually may save you some very big repair bills. Also when I changed mine the oil in the rear sump plug was like thick sludge which is the drain down from the turbo. Guess on mine even though it had full LR history had not been dropped!! Still no guarantee mine will last but good servicing can only help Worse things happen at sea! Well thats what swmbo said when WRENS came to sea!!!

How many people let their car idle for 30 seconds after stopping and turning the engine off to prevent the turbos getting oil starvation ? The handbook states 10 seconds - but I always give mine longer. Look at wagons - their turbo's last for 350k miles + and they are working all the time - thats why wagons have their engines running when they park up .I know of a few work collegues whos turbos have failed and not one ever let them idle to allow the oil to cool Rolling Eyes

Can the turbo be inspected? If it could be replaced BEFORE it failed, then problem solved.

Should the turbos be considered a service item and replaced at a certain mileage?

The catastrophic damage that can be caused by a failed turbo is disturbing.

@mike - why did you change the oil so often (twice in the last 2 months)?

No but the correct 12 monthly service intervals and the correct oil usage should be adheared too strictly... Only takes a litre of mineral based oil (topping up in a petrol station) to start the turbo doom train a rolling....... Rolling Eyes

As per my signature, I also have a Santa Fe which I admit, is not the most inspiring vehicle in the world but you know what, it's totally and utterly bullet proof. Hence the 5 and 7 year OE
warranty given by Hyundai and Kia.

There is no way I could trust the L322 as being the only means of transport.

I do love a FFRR but I equally do wonder whether all the effort is worth it sometimes! 2006 4.2 SC

The reason I did it twice was the oil was so black & the sludge that came out of the rear sump plug for a car that has only been serviced at landrover left me rather worried. Also my oil cooler in the V had been repaired by someone & was leaking so the first oil change was done replacing that. Also some people I know like using engine flushes but this was my preferred way. Also using good quality 5/30 fully syn both times now means I can follow the correct service interval & know the internals are nice & clean. Worse things happen at sea! Well thats what swmbo said when WRENS came to sea!!!
