Was this vehicle remapped? As I have knowledge of several TDV6 & TDV8's blowing turbos and the engine sucking the bits up ending in catastrophic failure. And also warped exhaust manifolds.

No it wasn't remapped it was just standard. Hoping it hasn't warped the exhaust manifolds as well :/ Did the engines still run at all do you know after their turbos went?

No, none of the engines ran, the sumps were full of the engines internals and bits of turbo fins totally goosed

Do let us no what the diagnosis is & hope it is not as bad as you fear. If it is bad I am sure plenty of people on here can help advise you on the most sensible economic way forward is to get your FF back up & running again.

Just a thought ... if it won't run unless the filler cap is off this would indicate an inability to vent the exhaust gasses would it not? Land Rover Addict

I have a 2008 model TDV8. My car lost power and a message showed on the dashboard,,''engine system fault''
I stopped, had it recovered and now Land Rover tells me the damage is R280 000. ($28000). Just like that.

Turbo failed and sucked all the oil out of the engine. The heat gauge did not even rize and the car still idled when I stopped. White smoke came out the exhaust.

They don't fix engines, they only replace it.

Does anybody know where I can find a secondhand engine as I am forced to fix the car myself?

Possibly? Would the indicate blown turbo or blown head gasket?

First quick google :

Quote:
Oily grey smoke coming out of the open oil filler cap and crankcase breather hose in significant amounts with the engine warm and running, possibly with a smell of diesel fuel. Shows that combustion pressure is passing down the bores into the crankcase. Likely causes could be broken or worn rings, badly worn pistons, and possibly worn or deeply scored cylinder(s)

...which would lead to wonder about the PCV hoses possibly. However this is just a shot in the dark! Land Rover Addict

Another thing to mention is the top right hand large hose going into the engine was completely soft and felt as though it was 'pulsing' when you squeezed it while the engine was idling...

I found out that when a turbo fails, it sucks the oil into the intercooler and then the oil ends up on the pistons via the air intake. This causes the conrods to bend etc etc.

Dear Duckworth. Do you have spares as well? (conrods, bearings, pistons etc.)

What will a sub assembly or 2nd hand engine cost me?

@Marx,

have you discussed your car's issues with some of the indies in South Africa - maybe there could be another way of solving your problem.

I think in PE there is a shop called Savoy Motors - according to the guys on the 4x4community forum he is quite good. Also have a chat with Walter @ LRZone (he is in Pretoria, but always willing to give advice).

I hope its not as serious as dealer told you as I am also considering buying a TDV8, but your experience is now scaring me off. Maybe I should just hang onto my 2004 FFRR 4.4 v8.

Again hope you come right.

Trevor
