Could I be unlucky in it being a dud new alternator?.

The company I bought it from have agreed to send me out a replacement, which is totally decent of them.

I will give it a try and cross everything!.  "I got him boxed in like a turtle's pecker!".

Quick update guys.

The second new alternator arrived today, which I fitted with everything except wiring crossed and bingo!.

No more battery light, no more error messages, brilliant.

So the first new alternator was in fact faulty.

I probably could have done without the new battery but after the strain put on the old battery and with winter coming up, I am unlikely to regret the investment in the long run.

I would like to thank everyone who posted in this thread with suggestions and help.

That's what makes this forum great.

Think yourself lucky you changed the alt twice on a petrol not a TDV8

To be honest, the first time I changed it was a bit scary, but second time it was quite straight forward because I knew exactly the procedure to do it.

Just a side note for others of you that need to do this on a 4.4 v8, there is no need to remove the radiator.
As long as you remove:-

Disconnect battery.
Coolant from system ( careful if it's still a bit hot )
Air intake pipe ( runs from air filter and MAF sensor to top of engine )
Viscous fan and coupling
Radiator fan cowling
Top radiator hose ( this connects in 3 places, water pump, alternator and rad ) remove from all 3 and put out of the way.
Remove belt tension
Remove serpentine belt
Remove belt tensioner mechanism completely ( dual wheel pulley type in this case )
Take off alternator wiring
Undo alternator retaining nuts x6

With a little wiggling and pulling, out she came, followed by a little coolant.

There was plenty of room to pull the alternator out and pivot upwards and out in front of the rad.  "I got him boxed in like a turtle's pecker!".

had a similar issue last year..if the alternator goes the likely hood of the battery failing concurrently are high...
you may find that the battery has sulphonated...winter will tell.. 2011 4.4 TdV8 Nara Bronze

If something can't be fixed with a hammer....... You have yourself an electrical fault!

Sadly, it's a copy, not a Bosch but for the money and not being 100% at the time that it was the alternator, I decided to give it a go.
Now I know it was infact at fault, I will just see how long it lasts to know wether or not it was worth it. "I got him boxed in like a turtle's pecker!".

I had a new copy. lasted 4 weeks before the bearings packed in! ended up with a recon bosch in the end. a few places round here will overhaul for about £80. I've got an old one I need to have reconditioned and then put on eBay. [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]
