Could be overheating tranny due to blocked bottom section of radiator stopping trans oil cooler from working efficiently under load. Get the Cooling system PRESSURE flushed before you damage the box and/or oil.

Sorry if I've mentioned this before, but gyrogypsy over on rangerovers.net is having spare potentiometers manufactured so that the whole transfer box shift motor doesn't need replacing in the event of a potentiometer fault.

I had the trans fail prog message today, it came on after I had put the key partially in the ignition, I had not pushed the key fully home and it caused noise on the immobiliser system that you could hear. I pushed the key fully home and it stopped, when I started the car the TPS message came up, but the car appeared to drive ok, for a short distance to a fuel station where when switched off the TPS message stayed on for a minute or so. On restarting the message had disappeared. Electrical gremlin? Or should I suspect something more sinister?

i would say electrical gremlin ..same thing happens with the touch screen going blank if you start and quickly take out the key..
it takes a while for all the ecu's to boot up and as they 'talk' to each other, if one is disturbed then a daisy chain effect happens and you get errors.. ... - .- -.

2003 Range Rover HSE 4.4 V8 Giverny Green

FWIW I started out with constant TFP errors. Diff went and during replacement gearbox oil was replaced followed by new battery when errors were still happening. Errors are now less frequent but occasional. Usual procedure is cycle ignition around a dozen time and it clears.

Just managed to get hold of full transfer box yesterday along with transfer case motor so going to take out potentiometer and see if it needs refurb by our resident whizz.

As and when its either ok or refurbed I will then do the one on the car as well and should have spare transfer box and motor.
