Just for the avoidance of doubt, the shift motor :

Can be unbolted & removed from the transfer box in situ. There’s no requirement to remove the transfer box from the vehicle.

Day 3 Got it back from stealers

They fixed the stiff gear shift and PARK problem, and I got no faults on the 20 mile drive home (though I didn't push it as wife was following me - no sense of direction)

I'll do the resistance check on the motor tomorrow. .

I will let the forum know what they say tomarrow. In the meantime, any more ideas would be good for me to take to garage in morning.

Any update? J.Seven

just to keep you all updated

Got my rangie back and done 500 trouble free miles now ! It was the torque converter and the garage put a recon box with all recon parts in for £1320 inc vat. 12 months or 12000 miles warrenty.

The service from the garage was very good! Called GearTrain in Bradford and they do loads of rangies every week for gearbox problems, Pile of torque converters in corner of yard ! Im in the AA and have the breakdown repair cover for £25 a month so they paid first £475 after taking a £25 excess.

Thanks for your advice everyone and i hope this helps others. 2003 Range Rover HSE 3.0 TD6

Well after spending a week or two playing around with a secondhand shift motor and my existing one, all resulting in the TFP message and stuck in Low Range. I gave up all hope and bought a new motor from LRDirect. (This is what the stealer said was wrong). Nope, still getting the TFP message. I am now close to suicide Big Cry Big Cry .

Joe was there any further development on this as I have exactly the same fault codes have a new transfer motor arriving tomorrow which from what most people have said this is what it points to. Now slightly worried as your post said this did not work Sad

@ windscreen dave

I am 10000 miles & 11 months into my recon box and new torque converter and everything is ok. I have read a few posts on here that would suggest it may be the torque converter if your getting the TFP message on the dash just like it was for me.

If you get the engine and box warm and the message comes on and you do some reverse and drive changes on a little slope it will struggle to hold the car in drive or reverse after a while if its the torque converter as it will just slip and that may help you pinpoint the problem? 2003 Range Rover HSE 3.0 TD6

Car drives absolutely fine with no difference in gear change or performance which is what led me to believe it is transfer motor but when I saw joe90 post about the various faults including short to earth mine is displaying all of those fault codes on the reader for transfer box but after he said that it didn't alter TFS when replacing motor it has slightly worried me.

I had a similar issue with mine-reving very high andf hardly moving then all of a sudden a huge thump and the car would spring into gear and drive as normal. sometimes it would just go straight to trans failsafe message. I had a oil leak from the bottom of my gearbox-took it to the garage they drained it fixed the leak and refilled-that was a year and a half ago and its been fine since.

Replaced the transfer motor on Wednesday had all codes reset and everything is working fine. Best of all no annoying pinging telling me that either my transfer box is in neutral or the trans fail safe prog. Bliss.

Sorry I missed this thread coming back to life!

My issue, which I haven't tackled since the autumn seems to lie within the system somewhere. I can go into low range, but can't get back into high range, even with a new shift motor on board. I have to fit an old shift motor and manually wind it back into high range.

I may have to bypass the ecu controller and fit a switch to wind it back.......

But as Windscreen Dave has found, it could just be a knackered shift motor.

Still got a brand new shift motor sitting in the garage! .

Joe not trying to teach you to suck eggs but did you make sure that you wound the cog on the transfer box all the way clockwise and then turn the notch on motor so it lines up before reconnecting it. (just a thought). Regards Dave.
